Tesla offering $1,000 referral bounty on Model S sales

Source: Reuters

Tesla Motors Inc will offer a $1,000 bounty to Model S owners and buyers who take advantage of word-of-mouth referrals of the electric cars, Chief Executive Elon Musk said Wednesday.

The referral bounty will be available to those who buy new Tesla sedans - and those who refer them - through October 31. Musk said the program, if deemed successful, could be extended to sales of used cars.

Such a referral program is unusual but not unprecedented among traditional automakers and their franchised dealers.

Musk, in a conference call with reporters, described the referral program as "a guerilla tactic against car dealers in certain states" that do not permit Tesla to sell its luxury electric cars directly to customers.

1. Er, it's a nice idea, but it needs to be significantly higher.

The absolute barebones base model is $70k, and that's with the smaller battery pack that only gives a tick over 200 miles range - you're probably going to want the bigger one if no other options, that's another $13 grand. If you want to go whole-hog and get the 762-horsepower, Ferrari-eating, Ludicrous-Speed P90D, fully loaded because why not, you're looking at $138,000. If I hit Powerball, I'd own one in an instant, but a thousand dollar "bounty" on that is just laughable.

Paying for health care, home and food is about as far as it goes here ... OK and some time with friends but I do not have that kinda cash laying around and the payments would kill my budget for food and home

The dealer wars just got more interesting. Luxury electric-vehicle manufacturer Tesla launches a referral program, with new owners receiving $1,000 discounts and those making the referrals getting $1,000 of their own.
