Cincinnati police officer indicted in shooting death of black man

Source: Yahoo! News / Reuters

CINCINNATI (Reuters) - A University of Cincinnati police officer was indicted Wednesday on murder charges in the fatal shooting last week of an unarmed black motorist who was stopped because of a missing front license plate.

Hamilton County prosecutor Joseph Deters called the July 19 death of Samuel Dubose, 43, "senseless" and "totally unwarranted."

Ray Tensing, the 25-year-old white officer who shot Dubose in the head, "wasn't dealing with someone who was wanted for murder," Deters told a news conference. "He was dealing with someone who didn't have a front license plate. This is, in the vernacular, a pretty chicken crap stop."

The incident was the latest in a series of fatal police confrontations across the United States that have raised questions about police use of force against minorities.

I suspect the university will be sued for hiring this officer.

Still - needs to be held accountable for his actions and I applaud Deters for his blunt criticism. And, at the same time, Tensing isn't a city employee, he's not part of the Fraternal Order of Police, and he's not "of the brotherhood".

The video is irrefutable and deeply saddening but it was a lot easier for Deters to come down hard on him without all the traditional support that a city cop would have.

Mall or school security can't pull people over for anything but disturbing the peace. Certainly not traffic violations.

Like I said, good that they're doing something but this is an easier call to make than if the shooter were a full fledged Cincinnati cop and member of the FOP.

And the sad part of this is, independent of the technicalities, the victim is still dead from a traffic stop. that's the chit that has to stop no matter who issues the "badge" for law enforcement.
