MH370 search: Debris found in Reunion gives clues on when plane part broke
Source: CNN
Saint-Denis, Reunion Island (CNN)When investigators get an in-person view of a wing component that likely came from a Boeing 777, they'll be looking for not only a serial number but clues as to why the part broke off the Boeing 777.
One group of independent observers said Thursday that the damage to the component -- a right wing flaperon -- should give authorities a good indication that the piece came off while the plane was still in the air.
...snip...
The rear damage could have been caused if the airliner had its flaperon down as it went into the ocean, some members of Exner's group wrote in a preliminary assessment after looking at photos and videos of the component.
But the lack of damage to the front makes it more likely the plane was in a high-speed, steep, spiral descent and the part fluttered until it broke off, the group said.

(22,000 posts)For 16 months a plane has been missing with no trace. At least we know what happened to the one shot down over Ukraine.

(17,469 posts)so, it kind of is a big deal.
There has been speculation about a possible pilot suicide cause since the plane disappeared. What new evidence is there to support that speculation?

(17,469 posts)and on my iPhone so not the best for typing. The article I read reported that a u-turn course change was programmed into the flight computer about ten minutes before their final contact. Add to that the fact that the transponder was turned off and things start to look very hinky.
But you are correct that it is speculation at this point.

(1,254 posts)My spouse has contact with several international pilots and they past on this story. Supposedly what the Chinese believed happened was that as soon as the co-pilot left the cockpit to go to the restroom, the pilot locked and disabled the door. There is some kind of mechanism or code that can be administered to unlock a door and efforts to do this by the co-pilot did not work (four attempts). Then the pilot opened vents in the body of the plane allowing for the oxygen to be released, killing the passengers. Then the pilot brought the plane slowly down while using up as much fuel as possible to insure that there would be as little destruction/break apart when hitting the water and leaving no trace of the plane. The reason behind this, the chinese supposedly believe, is because some friend of the pilot's was found guilty of being gay and sentenced to long term prison. The pilot was enraged about this and extracted revenge. Anyway, that is what is going around through the international pilot community. You can take it with a grain of salt. Interesting tidbit.

(8,747 posts)I would have never believed in the Suicide by Pilot if the Germanwings crash had not happened. Now, it appears Suicide by Pilot / Co-Pilot is the answer.
