Canada to hold national election in major test for PM Stephen Harper
Source: The Guardian
The Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper, on Sunday triggered a general election campaign, with the vote set for 19 October. Harper said on Sunday he had asked Canadian governor general David Johnson to dissolve parliament.
Harper, 56, said the election would be about keeping the economy strong and Canadians safe from terrorist attacks. He said now was not the time for inexperience and political correctness, referring to the opposition leftist New Democratic party.
Our wellbeing depends on the economy and the wrong leader will do real harm, he said. Now is not the time for the kinds of harmful economic schemes that are doing so much damage elsewhere in the world.
...snip...
Although a clear majority of Canadians have told pollsters they want Harper gone, the result is no sure thing. The loyalties of anti-conservative voters are once again split between Mulcairs New Democrats and the Liberal Party under freshman leader Justin Trudeau, both of which espouse broadly similar centre-left policies.

(21 posts)Harper is pitching a hold of power based on FEAR, money, "small" government with corrupt powers, fear, lies, fear and move away from limit on electioneering. Changes to the election act under Harper set election dates and then when campaign started (mostly ads by Harper's party) they extended the election period. DU we, in Canada, need your hopes prayers and good wishes for a stop to this pale but hazardous impression of GOP. WE need NDP victory in Canada!ok intro atricle to the changes to CDN system for this election http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/08/02/canada-election-2015-11-_n_7919902.html

(23,946 posts)Why would a third responding police unit have an officer take up a defensive position with a long barrel gun....for a "crazy man", Native in appearance, a local employed resident and environmental activist, waving a knife in broad daylight?
Why a tactical response to what police say was a man acting crazy and threatening two officers who were responding to an unrelated disturbance at the mall?

(8,692 posts)The outcome will probably be a dysfunctional and short-lived minority government. Who's doesn't really matter.
The NDP's seats in Quebec are the big question and the Quebec voter's thought process remains opaque as ever.

(3,286 posts)...in North America. Time is running out for the free-market economy and its failure to deliver social equality or social justice. Now, within 16 or so months we could have two social democratic leaders whose only purpose is to "deliver social equality and justice" and, the best part, without firing a shot.
They would call this A Bloodless Coup.
Mulcair is by no means "ineffectual" and the party principles of social justice are swaying the most cynical of voters like the good folks of Alberta. The time is now. Don't waste your vote on Trudeau. Be brave. Vote for democracy.

(23,867 posts)The reality is that the 1% are usually driven my money, and aren't going to volunteer for any changes. So it means slow motion change, which I won't live to see. Argh. But then you so eloquently stated a dream that can come true if the people can be united in what they have in common in the first place.

(36,747 posts)I honestly think the Cons will lose quite a large amount of seats in Alberta to the NDP. Rachel Notley was where we saw the first sign of the shift that is coming. The NDP will come out of this with just enough seats to fall short of an outright majority. The Liberals will be the kingmakers and Canada will have a NDP-Lib coalition govt. I think the Cons will be relegated to third place.

(24,339 posts)Then why is Harper holding early elections and risking it
A more sensible leader would wait until the situation was better for those possible changes

(5,604 posts)so the only thing Harper could have done differently is wait until the very last minute to call one. My guess is that the Cons don't expect any good news on the horizon, so they might as well start spending their sizable war chest on attack ads. A long drawn out and negative election, that turns people off from politics is probably in their favor. They want to kill any sense of optimism, or positive buzz or momentum that surrounds their challengers.
