Sen. Manchin Will Vote To End Planned Parenthood Aid

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin says he will back a Republican bill cutting off federal aid for Planned Parenthood.
Manchin is a moderate and his decision Monday was not a complete surprise. Even so, Republicans were still expected to lose a Senate vote later Monday to halt federal assistance to the group.
Republicans introduced their bill after an anti-abortion group began releasing secretly recorded videos showing Planned Parenthood officials describing how they provide tissue from some aborted fetuses to researchers. The bill says it would transfer Planned Parenthood's aid to other women's health care providers.
Manchin said in a statement that until questions about Planned Parenthood are answered, the organization should not receive taxpayer funds.

What questions you spineless prick? It's a fake story to stoke outrage and kill funding for an organization that helps poor and needy women/families. Gutless turds like this are the worst.

Just because my dad wasn't one, as a member of the press, it was normal for him to know all those people. Just because I don't make a million a year doesn't mean it's a big deal because I know people who do. What's the normal protocol now, turn your back on your friends if they should have the misfortune to become successful?

(92,219 posts)That is the problem with Howard Dean's50 state strategy
It calls for inclusion of differences in from the traditional Demand critic party since FDR. It assumes progressives cannot win in certain southern states, but if we accept the blue dogs, then we. Can have the majority in congress
That is what happened in 2008, and why we got the ACA and not single payer
It is a double edged sword for sure
The advantage is if we win the majority in the Senate or house, Demand carts can set the agenda

(755 posts)I rather have Manchin re-elected in 2018 and 2024 than see another Republican in West Virginia. The women of West Virginia will have to question Manchin in November 2018, and if he loses in 2018, West Virginia Democrats are going to be extinct. I am a man, but I will leave this issue to women to decide.

(23,664 posts)And as far as West Virginia is concerned, it's the perfect case study in the ultimate failure of a resource extraction based economy. It's residents have been duped into fouling their own environment for decades so that out of state investors could get rich. And its politicians Democratic and republican, have made careers out of shilling for the people who have tuned the place.
And when its no longer economical to get anymore coal, gas, timber out of there, the investors will just walk away, leaving the residents in the pile of shit they created. It's already started, with interruptions to the water supply for thousands of residents.
NYC Liberal
(20,136 posts)and a Republican who votes with Democrats only 10-15% of the time and that is probably the only choice in WV I'll take the Democrat, DINO as they may be.
The good they do is that things like committee majorities and heads are determined by pure party seat count. If Democrats have 51 seats, then we get all the committee assignments even if some of those Dems are DINOs/conservadems.
Between a DINO and an actual liberal/progressive, of course, we should support the liberal any every time.

(155 posts)If WV had been smart and not in the pocket of out-of-state interests, they would have put a tax on every ton of coal that left the state. I live here and everywhere you look there are "Friends of Coal" signs. The hand-writing has been on the wall for decades that a coal based economy was not sustainable. We have to change our focus. At the Bermie's meeting on the 29th I met a man who said that a plant near Charleston has the raw materials and capabilities of manufacturing solar panels, but the coal and gas lobbies are against it.The people here don't have any vision. I don't think that coal miner's really want their sons to follow in their footsteps ,but there aren't any other well-paying jobs for young men without a college education. As a result, one of our major exports is our young people.
As far as the chemical spill in the Kanawha River goes, it was discovered by an employee of the WV Office of Air Quality Control where my daughter works. The employee was sent out to investigate a licorice odor in that general vicinity. He discovered the leaky tank and saw that it was draining directly into the river just about a mile from the intake for the water company.

(3,579 posts)No goddamned moderate would do such a thing. This is knee-jerk conservatism playing to the rubes. For the record, his state had the eighth-highest teenage pregnancy rate in 2011 up from the twenty-fourth spot in 2008.
http://www.hhs.gov/ash/oah/adolescent-health-topics/reproductive-health/states/wv.html
Manchin was governor of West Virginia from January 17, 2005 to November 15, 2010, and the increase in teenage pregnancies happened mostly on his watch. He should be looking to reverse that trend in his home state, but noooooooooo! Let's cut Planned Parenthood funding!

(56,582 posts)Strictly speaking, the "blue dogs" are the 15 Representatives in the Blue Dog Coalition:
http://bluedogcaucus-schrader.house.gov/members
Past members have included Gabby Giffords and John Barrow (the last white Democrat from the deep South, who lost in 2014).
But, the term is sometimes used to describe southern and western Democrats in the Senate: Manchin, Nelson, Tester, McCaskill, and Heitkamp.
"Moderate" is just a description, and can apply to a lot of things. Generally the right end of the D caucus and the left end of the R caucus are called "moderates".
The blue dog coalition is, in general, socially conservative and fiscally somewhat liberal. This is in contrast to the "New Democrats" group, which are rather the opposite: pro-choice and pro-LGBT rights, but tend to prefer more laissez faire economic policy (Blue Dogs will generally be strongly pro-union and anti-immigration).

(24,414 posts)shouldn't he WAIT until "questions" about Planned Parenthood are answered BEFORE federal funding is cut off- that is even if there are really any further questions that have to be answered? The full videotape footage has been released showing the full context of the questions asked and answered of the PP officials, which indicate that nothing untoward was happening. Why is the burden of proof on PP to answer these charges anyway? Shouldn't the burden of proof be on the people making the accusations? Abortions and fetal tissue donation don't even comprise a large part of PP's operations. And they're going to try to cut ALL of its federal funding over heavily doctored video footage just because it makes people feel "uncomfortable" about what happens during LEGAL medical procedures?

(16,975 posts)My husband worked in an aluminum plant on the Ohio side of the Ohio river. Lots of WV co-workers. Every election, they all talked about the Democrats taking their guns. My husband asked over and over--how many of your guns have Democrats taken? Deaf ears. So the Repugs took the jobs, the social safety net, medical care, just stripping it all down like an old car, and WV is turning red because of guns.

(2,605 posts)PP is facilitating the process whereby patients elect to donate their fetal tissue for medical research.
So
What questions? Get your SHIT together Manchin, there are no questions that are unanswered if you aren't a fucking idiot.
The Democratic Party should cut all ties to you and the Senate Democratic leadership should make sure that you became a permanent backbencher.
"Nucatola repeatedly talks about affiliates only wanting to provide a service to their patients, who elect to donate the tissue for medical research, and not having that service impact their bottom lines. She says that its not a new revenue stream the affiliates are looking at and that nobody should be selling tissue. Thats just not the goal here. She says some affiliates might donate the tissue for free."
