Bobby Jindal Cuts Off Medicaid Funding to Planned Parenthoods In Louisiana
Source: TPM
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) announced he had ended the state's Medicaid contract with Planned Parenthood in response to an anti-abortion "sting" video campaign against the reproductive health service.
In recent weeks, it has been shocking to see reports of the alleged activities taking place at Planned Parenthood facilities across the country. Planned Parenthood does not represent the values of the people of Louisiana and shows a fundamental disrespect for human life," Jindal said in a statement. "It has become clear that this is not an organization that is worthy of receiving public assistance from the state."
The move comes despite the fact that the two Planned Parenthood clinics in Louisiana do not provide abortion, which Planned Parenthood confirmed to the state's Department of Health and Hospitals as part of the state's ongoing investigation into claims that the organization is profiting off of aborted fetal tissue donations. A third clinic being built in New Orleans plans to offer abortion, but will not participate in the tissue donation programs, a Planned Parenthood executive told the state.
Jindal's termination of Medicaid funding also comes as the U.S. Senate weighs its own measure to cease federal funding to Planned Parenthood over the videos that an anti-abortion group going by Center for Medical Progress began releasing last month. The standalone Senate measure is unlikely to overcome a Democratic filibuster expected Monday evening, but conservatives are already pushing that it be attached to a larger, must-pass spending bill lawmakers will consider when they return from the August recess.

A very telling move.
And a classic Republican move from today's Republican Party. Republican political priorities these days seem to be mostly about destruction of "enemies" , governmental and otherwise, whether or not it makes economic or moral or pragmatic sense. Destruction for its own sake. The very definition of vandalism.

(9,141 posts)access to birth control and family planning. Planned Parenthood doesn;t do abortions...they make referrals for abortions. Jindal's stupidity can be demonstrated by the following statistics: )from the NYT article by Nicholas Kristof)..."This in a country where half of all pregnancies are unintended, where 30 percent of American teenage girls become pregnant by age 19.
The Guttmacher Institute, which studies reproductive health, calculates that Title X family planning centers prevent about one million unintended pregnancies a year, of which 345,000 would have ended in abortion. It says that every year Title X clinics avert some 53,000 cases of chlamydia and 8,800 cases of gonorrhea, and save the lives of 1,100 women who would otherwise die of cervical cancer.
In other words, Title X prevents an abortion about once every 90 seconds...."
This should be shoved in Jindal's face and read aloud in the state legislature.

(1,407 posts)don't do abortions, the organization does. So i can understand his decision to cut off PP since he is against abortion and money is mutually interchangable. Doesnt mean I agree with it though

(5,402 posts)Good luck with that. Repubs hate any woman who will not stay in her place, and will do just about anything to further demean women.
They think women who get abortions deserve to die, so they are systematically removing access to safe abortion. The back alley is preferable to these despicable lowlifes; that way women getting abortions are more likely to get what they deserve-- death.

(6,917 posts)It's been a long time since a politician has been so thoroughly disliked by all political parties. On top of it, the resentment is abundant that he is little more than a tool for out-of-state interests, and that he abandoned his duties as governor to be a fulltime presidential candidate, while collecting a salary in Baton Rouge.
He lives in front of the TV cameras, advised by people who think "Duck Dynasty" is what America is all about.

(1,309 posts)Alleged offenses do not under any law I have heard of constitute legal grounds for terminating contracts. This smacks a lot of what the governor of Texas is indicted for. Un-warranred attacks and withholding of state funds to punish your political enemies.
If DOJ does not take this case they are missing their very best chance ever to prove gender discrimination. I suspect he will change his tune shortly if actually sued in state court..

(30,058 posts)In Louisiana they would need to import workers. Well, the imports happened, to other states. People in Louisiana had to leave the state and go elsewhere to gain employment. If Jindal touches something bad things results. He has messed with the state employee retirement and again without good results. He did manage to hire his buddies on staff jobs and give them raises, good for nothing loser.

(6,578 posts)I do not believe that just because you're opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don't? Because you don't want any tax money to go there. That's not pro-life. That's pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is.

(12,471 posts)When voting for someone the person running should have her/his legal given name on the ballot. Not his/her nickname.
It pisses off Republicans because they want to hear an "American" name, which is really why Piyush has a nickname that is not at all related to his legal given name.
