U.S. asks Venezuela to scrap ban on opposition political candidates

Source: Reuters

The United States on Tuesday called on Venezuela to reverse a ban on opposition members from holding office and participating in the Dec. 6 parliamentary elections.

Washington made the request after opposition leader Maria Machado said she had tried to register on Monday as a candidate but her application was rejected.

The State Department said in a statement that the decisions by Venezuelan electoral officials "clearly have the intention of complicating the ability of the opposition" to contest the poll and to limit the field of candidates.

"We call on all relevant Venezuelan authorities to reconsider the ban imposed on candidates, and reiterate our call for credible and timely electoral observation," the State Department said.

On the one hand, whoever counts the votes has to be above suspicion.

But you can have the cleanest, most open, transparent vote counting procedure after elections that have the tightest security and most absolute privacy protections on Earth if you just make sure any opposition candidate with a chance of getting more than a few votes is disqualified.

You don't need to fuck with the election if you control the choice of candidates. They're just a lot more subtle about it here.

Only an idiot couldn't see through what the Venezuelan government is doing is anti-democratic at best. Dictatorial at worst.

"Oh they don't do that since they are left-wing!"

This is not "caused by the CIA," or "the oligarchs," or some other right-wing group in Venezuela.

This is Maduro, and his cronies.

They are corrupt, and dictatorial.
