Pope security measures excessive, some experts say

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

The massive security efforts planned for next month's papal visit to Philadelphia are unnecessarily burdensome and might not be effective, according to some security and counterterrorism experts.

The closure of major highways and bridges for more than two days, a three-square-mile traffic-free zone in Center City, restricted transit access, and the closing of offices and businesses "is a disproportional reaction," said Scott White, a former security agent for the Canadian government and now a professor of homeland security and security management at Drexel University.

"What are we attempting to do here? Are we attempting to protect the pontiff, who already has - and always has - rings of security? Or are we attempting to protect one million or two million people?"

"We can't protect 40 people in a cinema," White said, referring to the spate of recent theater shootings. "How are we going to protect two million people?"

We live in the center of the highest security zone. My wife and I are going to fill the refrigerator and enjoy the show over that weekend.

It will be interesting to see the security here next year when Hillary accepts the Democratic Nomination.

The restaurants and other tourist-oriented businesses that will lose tens of thousands of dollars because their employees can't get to work and they themselves can't bring in supplies? The part-time workers who will lose several days of wages? The parents with no backup for child care as the schools close?

Do you just expect to sit back and enjoy the show because it's no skin off your back?

He could do his sermon remotely from the Vatican. Not like he has anything to offer than hot air... It just seems an inappropriate use of tax dollars.

We pay for him to go places to increase US influence in the world. Why do we have to pay for the Pope to come here and increase the influence of the catholic church around the world? The Vatican should pay for all expenses involved in security. They have plenty of dough.

is a head of state (whether one agrees whether that state should exist is immaterial as the Vatican is accepted as a state by numerous treaties).

additionally, he is a head of state that draws larger crowds than just about any other.

I'm not religious anymore. But I give this guy props. He still is not there on gay and women's rights but if anyone is going to change the Church it is this guy. How he got elected, I don't know but he is 1000x better than Benedict/Ratzinger. He is of course going with the party line but I really believe he is a nice man. I only live half an hour from Philly and would be there if I knew I could shake his hand.

Someone has to decide to accept that the Earth revolves around the Sun rather than the other way around. I believe this is that type of Pope. He can change things on the gay and women issues. He is the first Pope in a long time that I think really cares about people rather than the institution of the Church.

I'd would almost bet that somewhere, in some smoke-filled room (or Home Depot office), a gaggle of John Birch types are dreaming up a patsy plot along the lines of Oswald, Sirhan, or James Earl Ray. Some "lone nut" that might rid them of this troublesome priest.

God protect this Pope.

There are reich wing nut jobs in this country who are being egged on by the GOP who don't like the Papacy now that there's someone slightly progressive in the office.

I mean, shouldn't this guy already have the best security ever? I mean, EVER? And that's before the earthly security he has, apparently assuming that God is not infallible (or some sort of trickster). And anyway, if he does get whacked, isn't that God's will or some such? All this circular woo makes my head spin.

If Jesus had had security like this, it would be a whole 'nother religion.

sanguine as some may think they should be. They are firmly rooted in the physical world and always have been.

Not Catholic, so I don't know their ways, but the RCC has 1.2 billion (and growing) followers world wide. So he is a BFD.

Sounds like the disruption is going to be severe for those who live in Philly. The GOP invited him, or so I thought, so the federal government is on the hook. Naturally, willing to be corrected if they are not why he is coming here.
