Bernie Sanders defended Democratic presidential primary foe Hillary Clinton against "sexist" criticism on Sunday.
Washington (CNN)Bernie Sanders is battling Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination -- but he's defending her trustworthiness, saying the former secretary of state is facing "sexist" criticism.
"I think for a variety of reasons, Hillary Clinton has been under all kinds of attack for many, many years. In fact, I can't think of many personalities who have been attacked for more reasons than Hillary Clinton. And by the way, let me be frank and I'm running against her: Some of it is sexist," Sanders, the Vermont senator, said Sunday in an interview on CBS's "Face the Nation."
..........................
Sanders said he's focused on issues like trade and Wall Street reform, and doesn't plan to lodge the same kinds of complaints about Clinton's personal style that many Republican presidential contenders have.
"I don't know that a man would be treated the same way that Hillary is," Sanders said. "So all that I can say is I have known Hillary Clinton for 25 years. I admire her. I respect her. I like her. She and I have very different points of view on a number of issues."............

Thank you Sen. Sanders.

(9,958 posts)Then there is the legitimate criticism of HRC that gets labeled as "sexist."

(8,812 posts)And some people who criticize Israel's occupation of Palestine are anti-semitic.*
But that doesn't inoculate anyone from legitimate criticism.
What we should condemn in no uncertain terms are people who "play the gender card" or the race card or the religion card when voicing their disagreements.
But we should allow -- indeed, encourage -- legitimate criticism that steers clear of smears and other ad hominem attacks.
So any would-be painters who are tempted to get out your broad brush, I respectfully suggest that you put it back in the jar.
*Yes, I know. Both Arabs and Jews are Semites.

(48 posts)Because just saying that any valid criticism of her gets called sexists is really just a way to deflect and attempt to diminish the very real phenomenon of the horrendous treatment she is getting simply because she is a woman that is on a powerful path.

Not "sexist," but a perceived "attack" nonetheless.

I'll be a Hillary supporter only if I must. I'd rather not have to hold my nose to vote though.

(21,024 posts)Clinton likely sees nothing to be gained by defending Bernie. People who support BLM seem to support her too. Defending Bernie might cost her a vote or two.

(16,974 posts)now some of her supporters that talk about her hair style and what she wears, could that be sexist?

(2,474 posts)It could be a way to combat descriptions of Clinton as a hag that wears ugly pants suits.
In a broader area is Cosmopolitan sexist or are they promoting a positive view of women's bodies? I've heard both sides argued.
Could we say that isms have to include intent?

(34,125 posts)He does not have to hate someone or hate on them to oppose them. To me these comments are the biggest clue to his feelings about women and our issues (I would say the same about racial issues but that is not for me to decide). She is such an easy target with the tactic of sexism and he could probably pick up supporters just by targeting her as well.
Stay cool Senator and thank you!

Sexist crap is something that we Dems should be united against, even if we have policy disagreements.

(3,205 posts)He understands how politics work, and what his odds of winning the nomination are. If HRC wins the nomination Bernie wants to walk into that convention with enough delegates - and good will from HRC and her supporters - to have a major effect on the democratic platform. Even losing he has the potential to move the political conversation in this country back to the left. He will then endorse HRC and campaign for her urging his supporters to vote for her. All of this will be much easier if he can maintain an amiable relationship with Hillary by keeping their disagreements about policy and not making them personal. And it will keep republican scum from throwing any nasty words back in his face.

(32,723 posts)The movie came out in 1995. In one scene they're racing across town when a woman in a VW convertible cuts them off and Bruce Willis says, "Hey lady! Who do you think you are? Hillary Clinton?"
That's a sexist attack of course because Hillary didn't stay in her place and it was inspiring other women to get uppity. Imagine if it were a black guy that cut them off and he yelled, "Who do you think you are? Barack Obama?"
Point being - Hillary has been the target of sexist attacks for over 20 years.

(92,422 posts)posts on DU have used subtle sexist anatomical slurs, and DU did not put up with it. What was disturbing is the posts that were arguing that it represented censorship, to arguments that the United Kingdom uses those descriptions all the time, and it "isn't considered offensive, therefore it should be "ok"".
Bernie is a straight shooter, and calls them as he sees them. That is why in general, on DU, no matter who the candidate is that they support, the vast majority on DU do not question his integrity. The same was also true of Elizabeth Warren. Sure there are differences on some issues, and some with the belief that he would have a difficult time winning a general election if he wins the nomination, but those are all legitimate points up for discussion.
Personal attacks on DU on a Democratic candidate, do nothing to further the cause of the candidate they are supporting.

(92,422 posts)when the primary season started I had a positive view of both candidates. Due to the behavior of some of his supporters, along with his campaign, along with the actual ignorance of Senator Sander's on the issues, I no longer have a favorable view of him

Very first comment, on the very first show I watched, was about Hillary Clinton's thighs.
True story.

(4,490 posts)I agree with the actual quote, not the click bait headline :-P Criticism is good, and tough questions deserve to be asked. Like President Obama, the level of hatred she gets is far disproportionate to any actions or things she said compared to other politicians. There's a loud segment of the population where bigotry is clearly the main issue. As a teenager, I remember after Bill Clinton's cheating on her how some people hated her even more like it was her fault. It was ridiculous. And people still act like she's the devil when at worst she's just a pretty typical politician.
