Melissa Gilbert running for Congress

Source: Detroit Free Press

WASHINGTON – Actress Melissa Gilbert, best known for her portrayal as Laura Ingalls Wilder on NBC’s “Little House on the Prairie” in the 1970s and ‘80s, has announced her intentions of running for Congress in Michigan’s 8th District.

Gilbert, who lives in Livingston County with her husband, actor Timothy Busfield, would be running as a Democrat in a district that has been a Republican stronghold in recent elections: U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, won the race to replace former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Howell, last year, beating Democrat Eric Schertzing 54%-42%.

But someone with Gilbert's celebrity could make a splash, especially when it comes to raising funds for her campaign.

“I'm running for Congress to make life a little easier for all the families who feel they have fallen through the cracks in today's economy,” Gilbert said in a statement released on her website, www.gilbertformichigan.com. “I believe building a new economy is a team effort, and we need to bring fresh voices to the table to get the job done.”

That is a pretty 'red' section of the state. I wish her luck. I'm in the 5th District and have a truly wonderful Congressman - Dan Kildee. I have no doubt he would LOVE some reinforcements.

I love it when people become a success but still don't forget their roots. Jeff Daniels is another good example. I'm pretty sure he still has his main residence in Chelsea.

She's best known for her work in a family oriented and somewhat conservative drama. That may actually win her some conservative votes.

Gilbert, 51, has not held political office before but was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 2001 to 2005, serving two terms.

she has the right credentials. Remember old Raygun leading them while dumping many under the bus for the red scare.

Kudos that she is working with IRS and paying her back taxes. Unlike the GOP 1% who seek off shore tax shelters and ways NOT to pay taxes.

John Boner. Maybe she can get Nelly Olson to help her if they can stop fighting. LOL! Although, in today's media, a good cat fight would be popular, especially if Trump was the emcee.

I read her autobiography, called "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch", its probably the best bio I've ever read. She's smart, likeable and very funny. I highly doubt she would ever support Palin or be a republican.

There have been a lot of actors who've played right wing demagogues in roles but were left leaning in real life.

I can't help having a soft spot for her due to her great performance in one of my favorite Babylon 5 episodes. She was in the episode preceding this as well. Some good political subtext from Jeff Corey (as Justin) in this short clip.

I know this isn't meaningful as a reference for her, but I think a saw a good person underneath her performance. I hope she turns out to be a great candidate.
