Dozens of retired generals, admirals back Iran deal

Three dozen retired generals and admirals Tuesday released an open letter supporting the Iran nuclear deal and urging Congress to do the same.
Calling the agreement the most effective means currently available to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, the letter said that gaining international support for military action against Iran, should that ever become necessary, would only be possible if we have first given the diplomatic path a chance.
The release came as Secretary of State John F. Kerry said U.S. allies were going to look at us and laugh if the United States were to abandon the deal and then ask them to back a more aggressive posture against Iran.
Not only would U.S. global credibility be undermined, Kerry said, the dollars position as the worlds reserve currency would be threatened.

(11,014 posts)They are waiting for cover which will be provided by McInsane, Corker and Orrin Hatch. Once those three say they'll vote for the deal, floodgates will open and most repukes will vote yay.
They are waiting so that it would appear like they studied it every which way. Then they will say it is flawed but voting no would be worse.

(23,158 posts)In other words, something most Repugs would never ever consider. They will vote NO for 3 reasons,
1 - Bibi worship
2 - Obama
3 - They just always vote wrong

It would be highly improper for any active duty officers to insert themselves into a political fight.
36 signed. In 2006, Slate estimated that there were 4700 Retired Generals and Admirals (1 to 4 star officers). So 36 would be 0.00766 or a little over 3/4 of one percent.
Anybody know why Wesley Clark didn't sign?

He said he decided to speak out to demonstrate that those of us who love Israel in the United States are not of one mind and one voice on this matter. I thought it was important to represent some of the diversity within the American Jewish community.

(185 posts)Who knows the details of this deal like what triggers new sanctions, what needs to be done to reinstate sanctions, what weapons are allowed to be researched and built, who is allowed to inspect and when etc. Is there a link to find this info?

(27,509 posts)I'll try to dig up a link later.
Interpreting it, and looking for loopholes and deficiencies is another matter.
There is currently only one physicist in Congress, and he is still undecided:

I have a lot of respect for Richard Garwin, Frank von Hippel, and Valerie Plane;
they are experts in the field and are in favor of the deal.
I haven't had the time to evaluate it myself.
This is a complicated deal.

That would change public opinion

(21,803 posts)There is no liberal media. But turn on your radio, or your number one cable news channel, or network news, and you will only hear opposition to the diplomatic solution.
Obama made an excellent impassioned defense of "the deal" a couple of weeks ago, but he needs to do more. Even liberal supporters are not out there making the case to the public. Maybe if they acted all crazy like Trump they would get some media attention.
