Hillary Clinton Goes After Scott Walker On Education Cuts

Hillary Clinton Goes After Scott Walker On Education Cuts
Walker's latest budget proposal included a $300 million cut to Wisconsin's university system.

WASHINGTON -- Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton highlighted the education record of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) at a town hall in New Hampshire on Tuesday, contrasting her plan to alleviate student debt with the policies of the Republican presidential primary field.

Walker's proposed budget for the next fiscal year, which he announced in January, included a 13 percent cut in state funds to the University of Wisconsin system and a $127 million cut in public primary school funding. The Republican presidential candidate called the $300 million in cuts for the university network "manageable," though his plan was met with bipartisan criticism and layoff predictions.

Walker seems "to be delighted in slashing investment in higher education in his state, in making it more difficult for students to get scholarships or to pay off their debt," Clinton said, adding that he is also "eliminating the opportunities for young people who are doctors or dentists who actually work in underserved areas in return for having their debt relieved, ending scholarships for poor kids, [and] ... rejecting legislation that would have made it tax deductible for you on your income tax to deduct the amount of your loan repayment."

"I don’t know why he wants to raise taxes on students, but that’s the result," Clinton added.

In her comments, Clinton referenced legislation that was backed by Democrats in the state legislature but was never sent to Walker's desk. It would have helped borrowers refinance their student loans and deduct student loan payments from their state taxes. Walker questioned whether the proposal was "more than just politics." ................

Hillary Clinton Shreds Scott Walker For Delighting In Harming College Students

At a campaign event in New Hampshire................

Video:

Former Sec. Clinton said:

Now, I have to draw a contrast with the candidates on the other side of the aisle. If you—I bet some of you might have—sat through four hours and seventeen candidates of debate the other night. Really, I admire you greatly for that. It’s a part of being in New Hampshire, though, the first in the primary—the first in the nation primary. So I know you’ve got an obligation. But if you go and look at those tapes, if you haven’t seen it, there was not one word from one of those candidates about making college affordable or dealing with debt.

Now, I don’t know who they’re talking to out on the campaign trail—well, I kind of have an idea—but I’ll tell you who I’m talking to and listening to. I’m talking to a lot of young people and their families who raise their hands at events like this, or come over and talk to me after it’s over and say, “I’ve got this horrible debt” or “I had to drop out of college. My mom got sick. I couldn’t continue. What am I going to do?” I think this is a major challenge, and I want us to address it.

Not one word from the other side. And you take somebody like Governor Walker of Wisconsin, who seems to be delighting in slashing the investment in higher education in his state; in making it more difficult for students to get scholarships or to pay off their debt; eliminating the opportunities for young people who are doctors or dentists to actually work in underserved areas in return for having their debt relieved; ending scholarships for poor kids; and most surprisingly to me, rejecting legislation that would have made it tax-deductible for you on your income tax to deduct the amount of your loan payment.

I don’t know why he wants to raise taxes on students, but that’s the result. When you don’t look for ways to help people who are not sitting around asking for something, who are actually working hard to get ahead. That is the basic bargain.

At a campaign event in New Hampshire, Hillary Clinton shredded Scott Walker and the Republican Party for gleefully cutting funding to higher education.

....in an organized and methodical way.

Every week she comes out with her next policy statement in addition to continuing to direct comments to the sortcomings of the republican candidates.

And as hard as outsiders try to tailor her campaign to their needs and wishes, she sticks to that plan.

Now, project that onto a Presidency - that is what I want to see in a President.

but there's a lot to like about Hillary too. There will never be a perfect candidate for anybody's particular taste, and what I really want is someone who will fight for us. She's showing that "sock it to um" as you said, and I think we need that.

It also warms my heart to hear anybody in a position to be heard by a lot of people- Clinton, Sanders, or whomever- call out Governor Howdy Doody. I really, really, really can't stand him!

So, thanks for your opinion...

All the while, Senator Sanders does what he has done for decades... That's DECADES...

And that is "talk to the people, tell them the issues he will address, and yes, solutions'...

Oh, and no 'negative ads'... You see, he is a 'statesperson'... something a "1% registered as a Democrat "has no knowledge of!

Cheers!
