Such sad news.

(15,038 posts)His 17 years in the House of Representatives after his leaving the White House were incredibly fruitful, as he argued passionately against the congressional gag rule on slavery, opposed the Mexican-American War and the admittance of Texas as a State out of a profound belief it would lead to Civil War, authored the compromise that staved off disunion over the Nullification Crisis, and was instrumental in establishing a number of institutions for the advancement of science and culture, among them the Smithsonian Institute and the US Naval Observatory. His involvement as counsel for the defense, and the argument he presented before the U.S. Supreme Court in the Amistad affair were instrumental in getting the Africans declared free and returned to their homes.
Because of John Q., I've long held that a special advisory seat should be established in Congress, and retired Presidents encouraged to provide official, on the record thoughts and counsel to both chambers.

(17,469 posts)was that I could think of a number of politicians more deserving of liver cancer.
But then I thought of how Jimmy Carter would not want me to think that way.
And I was ashamed.

(13,058 posts)The cancer could have been discovered during the surgery on the liver but it might be any number of other cancers. I only say this because it allows more hope. Liver cancer is a bad one so lets hope his cancer is a less serious variety.

(20,211 posts)His 3 siblings died of pancreatic cancer. I took care of my mother as she battled breast cancer. At his age, it's unlikely they can treat him very aggressively. At some point, palliative care is the way to go.

(9,901 posts)If you want to know the difference between him and Reagan. I watched President Carter address the nation and take responsibility immediately after the hostage attempt went south, and also watched Reagan dodge and deny responsibility for two weeks after 300 marines died for nothing in Beirut Lebanon.
Obama Legacy
(13 posts)Perhaps he was too good a man to be President.
But all in all, he was really plagued by bad luck, bad timing, and bad circumstances out of his control.
Oil
Olympics
Iran Hostage
Gas Prices

None of those things were really under his control
The failed Iran rescue mission...unfortunately he probably does carry responsibility for that. Nonetheless I wish him the best.

(9,901 posts)Failures on the ground, not planning, doomed the mission, but as Commander and Chief he rightly took full responsibility for the results of the mission.

(5,751 posts)A commander-in-chief is the person or body that exercises supreme operational command and control of a nation's military forces or significant elements of those forces. In the latter case, the force element is those forces within a particular region, or associated by function.
