Man guarding survival store accidentally shoots self

Sheriff frets that armed volunteers lack safety skills

Posted: Wednesday, August 19, 2015 2:45 am

By Harrison Grimwood Phoenix Staff Writer

Muskogee County Sheriff Charles Pearson expressed concern about armed men standing guard at a “Muslim-free” survival store in Oktaha after one of the men accidentally shot himself.

Terrence Veninga, 57, of Checotah dropped his old Colt .45-caliber revolver and shot himself at Save Yourself Survival and Tactical Gear.

“This is a very dangerous situation,” Pearson said. “I’m very concerned about the weapons they have and their safety skills with them.”

Veninga’s gun fell from its bucket holster and discharged. The bullet hit him in the wrist, Pearson said. Veninga was guarding the store because of alleged threats against it, Pearson said.

Man accidentally shoots himself while guarding ‘Muslim-free’ gun shop

by Daniel Rivero

Update 7:15pm: Twenty minutes after we posted this story, News on 6 reported that one of the men who is “standing guard” in front of the “Muslim Free Establishment” accidentally shot himself. We wish we were kidding about that, but we’re not. The shooting reportedly happened this morning.

“I saw several of those gentlemen out there yesterday,” Muskogee County Sheriff Charles Pearson told local media. “The way they were holding their weapons, with the fingers on the triggers, you can tell a couple of these gentlemen have no idea about weapons safety.”

“I didn’t want any terrorists, or Muslims, cult, whatever you want to call them, training on my gun range,” gun range manager Chad Neal explained to the Religious News Service last week about his decision to post a sign declaring his store and gun range a “Muslim Free Establishment.”

Since posting the sign, Neal told local news stations, his business and family have received threats from across the world, from places as disparate as Germany and New Zealand. That’s what prompted a group of private armed citizens to stand guard in front of his store, keeping watch for potential attackers.

That's the problem with carrying works of art like these old colts, it tends to lead to polishing and admiring, instead of leaving it in the holster where it belongs while carrying.

Wed Aug 19, 2015, 10:00 AM

True "Hicks" know the effectiveness of pistols and thus will NOT waste they money on them.

Side note: Sounds like he was caring a Colt Automatic. When I was in the Service I was issued one, and was told that it was to be carried "Cocked and Locked" in combat situations but elsewhere it was to be carried unlocked (Safety Off). uncorked (The hammer NOT set to hit the firing pin) and un-chambered (No rounds in the chamber of the barrel, all rounds were in the removable magazine.

In a "Cocked and Locked" situation you had a round in the chamber ready to go off but you needed to undo the safety (unlock) and then pull the trigger. This can be done quickly but given the nature of the 45 Automatic even in combat you kept the pistol "Cocked and Locked" until you were ready to fire it.

In the un-chambered position, you had to work the entire action to get a round into the chamber and once done fire the weapon. The Safety had to be off to do this, but since they was NO round under the firing pin, the Safety was not needed. Unlocked, Un-cocked and Un-Chambered was the safest way to keep a loaded 45 automatic. The only hang up was that the 45 automatic had what is called an automatic hold button. This holds the action in the open to be loaded position once the last round in the magazine is fired (or if no rounds were in the magazine when you worked the action). This hold was undone by inserting a loaded Magazine OR by pushing a button to permit the action to close without a round in the chamber. If you worked the action, pushed the button to permit the action to close and then inserted the magazine, you would have a loaded 45 without a round in the chamber ready for use if needed.

Now, since I was never given any ammunition for the 45 I carried, I do not know if the safety actually worked and did not have the opportunity to carry it "Locked and Cocked" or, as it appears in this case "Cocked and unlocked" except on an empty chamber.

The above "Problem" with automatics still exists, and was one of the reason Police Offices for decades preferred double action Revolvers. A "Double Action" is a pistols where the pull on the trigger cocked the hammer in addition to releasing the hammer onto the firing pin. This required a fairly strong finger pull, Thus dropping a revolver would rarely caused the Revolver to fire for to fire drop would have had to cause the hammer to be pulled back and released. This need for a fairly stiff pull on the trigger prevents most accidental firing of such double actions.

In single action automatics (Like the 45 Colt Automatic) the trigger only controls the release of the hammer, the recoil of the previous fired round cocks an automatic. Thus such automatics require a much lighter trigger pull and do to the much lighter trigger pull much easier for the hammer to drop on the firing pin when the weapon is drop.

Double action and other revolver type actions have been developed for automatics since the 1960s. In a double action Automatic the trigger cocks the hammer on the first round, then the action reverts to single action (and thus the complaint that you end up with two different trigger pulls, a strong pull for the first round and an much easier pull on the trigger for subsequent rounds). The Glock developed its own trigger mechanism, that works much like a revolver and is the main reason the Glock is the favorite pistol of police today.

I mention the Glock for this idiot was carrying a Colt 45 Automatic not a Glock or a revolver and thus he has to be careful with it and appropriately was not. The 45 automatic was NEVER designed for quick draws, it was designed to be carried by someone with the pistol already in his hands ready to be fired but only in an actual combat area, elsewhere it was to be carried either "Cocked and Locked" or un-chambered. In a revolver, you can move with it loaded and ready to be fired for if you drop it, since the hammer is NOT cocked till the revolver is ready to be fired, it is almost impossible to fire when dropped. The 45 Automatic, on the other hand, when ready to fire, has the hammer already cocked, so that if someone drops the 45 automatic all you need is the shock to release the hammer and the weapon will fire. This is the reason the Army trained people on the 45 to carry it "Locked and Cocked" when in the move, the safety if on would prevent the pistol firing if dropped and the delay in unlocking the pistol could be minimized by constant training (Even the Army had claimed that the last group that truly trained with the Pistol was the horse mounted Cavalry, abolished in 1951, Thus when the 45 Automatics made during WWII were finally wearing out in the 1980s, the Army went with a Double action 9 mm for the Army had had to buy revolvers for pilots, and to a lesser extent police, in the 1940s through 1980s given the limitations of the 45 with those users of pistols).

Just a comment that this sounds like someone who was NOT taking the needed amount of safety when using a 45 Colt Automatic. He sounds like he wanted a quick draw pistol and the 45 Automatic was NEVER designed for that role. In the role he was playing, he needed a revolver but wanted to look cool with a Colt 45. Wrong gun for the wrong job (and that is from someone who LIKES the 45 Automatic, in its role as a combat pistol, there are none better, but it is NOT a quick draw weapon and NOT to be carried unlocked if one is moving).

An old friend of mine who is a gun nut has shot himself in the leg twice.

Once it just 'grazed' him. Once the bullet went straight through.

Neither time did he go to the hospital. A lot of these accidents go unreported.

Either they are lucky, as my friend was. Or they are just embarrassed.

Because they don't have real world problems but do have leisure time to seek drama from cable 'news', radio and the internet to spice up their aimless lives.

They'd be productive if they took their minds off commercialized thought patterns. The only danger they care about is from the media. Now, I don't know this guy's whole story, I am speaking of my feelings about this continued BS.

Real people close to them are in need. They won't get attention from helping them. There's no glory in looking at the face of human suffering and humbling yourself to walk in their shoes for a while.

These events are from a long line of consumerized products, including mental ones, that they purchased. There's no reflection since there is no personal cost. The echoes of paid speech in their heads is a rush, so they refuse to give it up. It's a display of their consumer power. They're desperately seeking a new identity as their actions heretofore have shown unpopular.

Playing soldier for a day, but only where they make the rules of engagement. No discipline, no sacrifice. If they wanna prove their manhood, they should go and fight ISIS, the face of extremist religion. Real people, unpaid, without media attention, have joined with the Kurdish to save lives of people there. Some are dying, sacrificing for what they believed in, and not for popularity.

This character, and the rest of them, strut around as if it's all a game, displaying foolishness in public.

They. Are. Not. Real.

These badass wannabees already have what most of the world prays to have. Clean food, water, shelter, family, a place in society, but they still have to vomit their fantasy life in public.

Because yesterday I gave a five dollar bill to a man who is an Afghanistan vet, from which he has back problems, and all he has are the clothes on his back. It's not the fiver that I can't really afford to give, it's the situation I see getting only piecemeal solutions to going on.

He's been sleeping on a bench in the parking lot of a drug store and taking cat baths at the restroom of the grocery store across the street. He has to jump through a series of hoops he cannot get through, to get help as a late middle aged veteran. We spoke about resources, and how unrealistic it is for a person who is disabled to jump through those hoops. He said he really wanted to take a shower. It was over 90 degrees yesterday.

We noticed a car driving down the street festooned with decorations as if it was a toy. Life is just a game if you have money. Also, he is a black man with white hair, reduced to asking old ladies for money in parking lots, I knew this. He said he was hungry and really wanted to get a hotel room to take a bath. I knew my fiver wouldn't help very much at all.

He joked that his only companions were the pigeons roosting on top of the store. I said that, well, if they take a poop on you, it's nothing personal. He said he'd already learned to put a newspaper on his head to sleep. I told him, paraphasing Shakespeeare, that nature is not as unkind as people are. He knew the reference.

We agreed it should not be this way. He said he was starting to get angry about everything. He was not mentally afflicted, quite sharp and emotionally grounded as well. I said I wished I could do more. He told me to not worry, he was a survivor, and to take care of myself and god bless.

But we have people going around looking for trouble who take for granted their position in society. I was very sad when I got to my little studio, which I will probably be priced out of next spring, as if I wasn't already. I'm still thinking about that man, and so many others I see in the streets. A lot of this is due to privatization, the new apartheid. In a 'blue' state.

He probably pinned the beaver tail safety (the one you squeeze while gripping it). Even with the hammer cocked, it is almost impossible to drop a stock Colt .45 and have it fire. I am assuming, of course, that they are taking about a Colt 1911 model.

On edit: I totally missed the word "revolver"' first time around. I saw Colt .45 and my mind improperly filled in the blank.

If they didn't open their big mouths and make offensive statements, they would not have to feed their paranoia as much as they do. I doubt they are in any real danger. They are offensive to billions of people in the world. If they had kept their mouths shut, no one would have even noticed them. It's stupidity.

I think they are addicted to paranoia. If things calm down, they open their mouths, say something highly offensive, then imagine the whole entire world coming to get them, causing them to be even more paranoid. Is paranoia addictive?

I don't get it. I'm sick of their stupidity and paranoia. They are making America suck.
