Bernie Sanders schools ‘corporate media’ reporter: No, I won’t slam Hillary for you
Source: RawStory
At a campaign stop in Dubuque, Iowa on Sunday, Democratic 2016 candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) refused to let a reporter bait him into trashing his rival for the nomination, former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton.
According to ReaderSupportedMedia.com, Sanders had just spoken to a crowd of about 2,000 when he made himself available to reporters. One reporter questioned Sanders on his positions on super PACs and the Iraq War in an attempt to goad him into criticizing Clinton.
What I said is that corporate media talks about all kinds of issues except the most important issues, okay? Sanders said sternly. And time after time, Im being asked to criticize Hillary Clinton. Thats the sport that you guys like.
He went on, The reason this campaign is doing well is because were talking about the issues that impact the American people. Ive known Hillary Clinton for 25 years. I like her, I respect her. I disagree with her on a number of issues. No big secret. I oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership. I want to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

(11,709 posts)I think she would very much approve of the race baiting actions of some of her supporters. Her actions in 2008 proved that.
2 respectful, positive posts then you casting stones from your own glass house. Put your money where your mouth is and lead by example. You've just stooped to the same level as some of his "boosters". I know, there are some Sanders supporters that are always negative but you can't complain when you lead the negativity as you just did in this thread.
I am a Sanders supporter and have been for almost 30 years. Feel free to disagree with him as I do Sec. Clinton. I will not complain about the small minority of her supporters that are constantly and consistently negative while encouraging my fellow Sanders supporters to follow our candidate's example.
As Democrats, we are very fortunate to have a number of well qualified people running. Look at the GOP and their choices. If my favorite politician, Sen. Sanders, loses the nomination to Sec. Clinton I will vote for her and work for her campaign. Same for Gov. O'Malley.

(57,936 posts)Bernie has a lot of supporters who are really smart. But I don't think any of us are his "surrogates." I for one never met him on a personal level ever. I attended his speech in Los Angeles. That's the most I have ever had to do with him.
None of us speak for Bernie.
That is why what we say should not reflect on him.
Hillary supporters have a problem with us because they cannot answer our arguments against voting for Hillary and for voting for Bernie.
Who are the so-called "surrogates" for Bernie. I don't think he has any on DU.

This will my last post on DU. I'm so sick of the childish she said, he said but they started it crap. Sound just like the corporate media we all complain about.

(7,888 posts)Democrats and Independents. Keep it up Senator Sanders and you can defeat the next Republican nominee, the tRump and faux news', Roger Ailes, Rupert Murdoch and that casino man in Macau.
Hillary currently has the best chance to become the next President. If she steps up her game. By that I mean, she needs to stop the lawyer speak.
Karen Finney is someone I admire. I'm not sure Mrs. Clinton follows any advise except The Big Dog's.

Which meant she gave him the maximum amount from the funds. The DNC has never run a strong challenger against BS in VT. Democratic Senate leaders have given him more power than he would have recieved on his own. They want what BS wants.
BS says he will NOT be a spoiler and run third party (despite hiring a Nader staffer) that would allow a hard rightwing Republican to take the office of presidency.
If HRC wins the primary, BS will come through and support her run, as will his REAL fans who care about his ideas. The hangers on that were more of anti-Clinton than pro-Sanders will ignore his pleas, most likely as they are more against her than for his ideas. Strange how that will work out, if it does happen that HRC wins in the nomination process.
The main problem we now have is -- we don't have another Obama. Neither HRC or BS are as young or at all charismatic.
HRC is close to Obama in pointing out values and is big on policy and getting things done, even if they are not what she wants to have done many times. BS is big on what is important, but hasn't been able to get others to go along with him in Congress. This is a peculiar position to be in when running for higher office, and there is none as high a POTUS.
He is not clear on practical matters of policy, but truly a great agitator. His rhetoric stirs people up, mundane talk of sausage making as HRC can turn people off. But getting stirred up and getting the important things done are two different gifts.
Obama has those qualities with a longer range vision than anyone running. He has been transformative in making structural change despite lack of support. His wife Michelle Obama says he never takes on a battle he cannot win, but that nothing will stop him once his mind is made up, to get it done.
The GOP is the enemy we must campaign against. They are more dangerous than a rattler, and want to inflict a fatal bite on the country. They want it to wither and die so they can sell it off to their sponsors.
They are doing a great job of it state by state and so many people have swallowed the Koch propaganda pills it's almost a done deal. They must be defeated, and that will require people to be encouraged and not be demoralized to make the changes we need. We all need to encourage and not demoralize each other. We're all we've got.

(57,936 posts)The only reason they don't support his bills, amendments, etc. (and they have supported some of them) is that they (the current members of Congress) vote as they think their donors and the American people want them to.
Any Democrat will vote for Bernie's ideas. Any Democrat provided the American people turn out and vote for Bernie.
The idea that Democrats in Congress won't back Bernie if he is elected is just silly. Sorry, but it is. If we Bernie supporters get a majority for our candidate, the Congress will be delighted to support his ideas.
Actually, it's the current Congress that does not support Obama.
The list of his ideas that he cannot work with Congress to accomplish is long, long, long. First of all, there is immigration, and it just goes on and on from there.
Bernie can't do worse in terms of getting Congressional support than Obama has.
It's time for Bernie's ideas.
We have gone through a technological revolution. The benefits of that revolution have not been reaching ordinary people because of a lot of issues that Bernie is talking about. We have to raise taxes on oil and gas and on the rich. And we have to invest that money in the environment, in cheaper means of transportation, in better education for all and childcare among other things. Most of all we need to stop the TPP. That trade agreement will be very bad for our country especially the trade courts.
If Bernie wins, he will get the support of Democrats in Congress. He is not that far to the left.

(114,904 posts)We don't take kindly to that kind of interference. And the Vermont Democratic Committee doesn't run anyone against him because they could never find a credible candidate to do so.

(15,224 posts)I love how Bernie is keeping this campaign on point - on the issues and the needs, and not digressing to mudslinging, whose hair looks best, etc.
Kudos to Bernie! May his example serve to persuade all of the others to do the same. We need honest discussion in this country. We need honest debate and disagreement without character assassination. We need to be able to talk to one another when we disagree with a resolution of our differences being the goal, not the exception.
