16-year-old 'gang raped and her eyes gouged out by her sister on the orders of a local pastor'

The attack occurred in the north Argentine province of Chaco

Friday, 21 August 2015

A teenage girl thought to be possessed by the devil has reportedly been raped by a group of men before having her eyes gouged out by her sister

The attack occurred in the town of General Pinedo, in the north Argentine province of Chaco, according to the Mirror. The girl is now the Perrando de Resistencia hospital.

Police have arrested the older sister, who is said to have claimed the local pastor ordered her to remove her sister’s eyes to cure her from possession by the devil.

She claimed that the religious centre, which provided her with a sharp knife, said she must be the one to remove the eyes of her sister in order to cure her. Apparently, it was believed that because demons are afraid of pain, the ritual would drive out the devil.

From the article:

Police Commissioner Pablo Almirón said that the girl’s parents also believed she was possessed by the devil, saying she kept seeing animals like goats that were not there.

Almirón said: "It is the first time in 22 years of my career in the police to have an event of this nature."

"The prosecutor has also said that it is the first time in his life. It is very difficult to explain that something like this could happen to a teenager."

Can you imagine how many brutal exorcisms, child sacrifices, and God-only-knows-what other bizarre rituals we've had in the U.S. in the last 22 years?

The British and Ugandans apparently have the same problem:

1) It's just mental illness. Even if religion hadn't told these people about demons and possession they would have invented them independently to get this exact delusion into their heads

2) It's misogyny and patriarchy unconnected with religion. The folks, presumably including the sister, just hate uppity women to the point of torturing demons out regardless of religious belief

3) it's poverty and oppression from rich countries, especially the US, and a lack of social support systems. If it weren't for our involvement with Latin America, such depravity there wouldn't exist

4) The religious center is really just a front group for a psycho's wild cult (even though we can't detail the difference non-reflexively) therefore it's not a real religion and he's not a real pastor

Should be pretty close because even when religious people themselves say they are doing evil shit for religious reasons, somehow they never actually are and religion's never to blame.

It's also extremely different from the rest of the region in terms of population.
And please don't give me the "depravity wouldn't exist" business. People are perfectly good at torturing one another, regardless of whether or not the US was involved in a nation's history. I'm the first one to be critical of US involvement in Latin America (I teach it for a living); this has zero to do with where it happened and everything to do with people who have poisoned brains.

In Islam, gang rape is not sanctioned - when it is officially done, it is used as a shaming punishment and not to banish demons. However AFAIK it is only a beloved tradition of tribal justice in Pakistan and India, and of course in numerous government detention centers. (See, "Reading Lolita in Tehran" for an example.)

Women getting their eyes gouged out is less common in the Muslim world. It is never to my knowledge done on a mullah's order. It is done by miffed husbands and in-laws to punish a disobedient wife. Noses and ears are often cut off as well. Jilted young men and fanatical enforcers of purity do their woman-blinding with acid rather than knives.

23. Are these people too uneducated to understand about Schizophrenia
Fri Aug 21, 2015, 09:06 PM
Aug 2015

I think she had Undifferentiated-type schizophrenia:

•Paranoid-typeschizophrenia is characterized by delusions and auditory hallucinations (hearing voices that don't exist) but relatively normal intellectual functioning and expression of emotions. The delusions can often be about being persecuted by a person or an organization, or feeling harassed or treated unfairly. People with paranoid-type schizophrenia can exhibit anger, aloofness, anxiety, and can be argumentative.

•Disorganized-type schizophrenia is characterized by speech and behavior that are disorganized or difficult to understand, and flattening or inappropriate emotions. People with disorganized-type schizophrenia may laugh inappropriately for no apparent reason, make illogical statements, or seem preoccupied with their own thoughts or perceptions. Their disorganized behavior may disrupt normal activities, such as showering, dressing, and preparing meals.

•Undifferentiated-type schizophrenia is characterized by some symptoms seen in all of the above types, but not enough of any one of them to define it as another particular type of schizophrenia

42. What we actually know now from press reports
Sun Aug 23, 2015, 06:04 PM
Aug 2015

The victim -- who is named Sandra, or Elizabeth, or maybe Yanina Anabel -- is 16 or 21 or 22 or 23; and she has an younger (or older) sister (possibly named Sandra Elizabeth and possibly 18 or 21 or 22), who might be the only person arrested in this case -- or perhaps the whole family was arrested. Some reports say the victim's brother took her to the hospital

At least one of the sisters suffers from psychiatric symptoms. Depending on which reports one might believe, both may: at least one seems to see things nobody else can see; at least one has heard voices commanding her to assault the other; and at least one has wandered about naked at times; it is not clear from all reports which of these refer to which sister

The events under question seem to have occurred Monday. Prior to that, on Sunday the family seems to have taken at least one of the sisters to church and to have engaged in some related activities at home. Depending on the report, the home activities included singing, praying, and touching -- or some satanic ritual. In one version of the story, the father instructed one sister (who was later arrived at the hospital blinded) to go watch and pray over the other sister, who then heard voices telling her to tear out the other's eyes; in another version, the girl was blinded as part of an exorcism. Some reports say that this was done with scissors; others that the perpetrator obtained the knife from a pastor -- or that the arrested girl said she was acting on instructions from a pastor. Accounts of sexual assault range from gang rape, to semen found on the victim, to some liquid (which might be sperm) found on the victim, to injuries in the groin area which might (but are not yet known to) represent evidence of sexual assault

This suggests that many current press accounts are still based on rumor (rather than first-hand reports) and that the actual facts may not yet be accurately reported
