Lion kills safari guide in Zimbabwe park where Cecil lived
By Jethro Mullen, CNN
Updated 5:33 AM ET, Tue August 25, 2015

(CNN)—A safari guide has been mauled to death by a lion in the same Zimbabwean national park where Cecil the lion lived.

Quinn Swales was taking a group of tourists on a walking safari in Hwange National Park on Monday morning when a lion suddenly charged, the company he was working for said.

. . .

During the safari Monday, Swales spotted fresh lion spoor and decided to track a pride of two females, two males and two cubs, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority said in a statement.

It didn't specify which of the lions attacked him but noted that one member of the pride, named Nxaha, wore a tracking collar, as Cecil did.

1. A WALKING safari? Sheesh, you don't stalk a pride of lions on foot

When I went on safari, we stayed in the jeep whenever the guide thought big cats might be around.

3. It says something that the mainstream media has

spent so much time reporting on this unfortunate lion and so little time reporting on the human victims and refugees of the proxy wars in Libya, Syria, Yemen, Gaza and Ukraine. We have entered into a state of media distraction. I feel for the lion and any animal that is killed needlessly by unfeeling sociopaths, but what about what our 'allies' like Saudi Arabia are doing to innocent civilians?
I mean, how much time has the media spent on this story? I would be curious to see the hours devoted to Cecil versus the hours devoted to exposing the plight of the victims of all of our wars.

Do you human lives not matter anymore?

4. This argument is completely bogus. We can walk and chew gum at the same time.

The media has been covering those wars AND Cecil.

And, looking at an even bigger picture, Cecil's killing represented a much bigger loss to the lion population than individual human deaths do to our population.

The world has too many people and not enough lions. So, in a sense, Cecil is a bigger story.

Human arrogance causes wars and the extinction of other species. It's all part of the whole.

This lion has received tons more coverage than all those people dying in our proxy wars. The media isn't even referring to the refugees from the wars as refugees, they are labeling them as 'migrants'. They are coming from Libya and Syria. One lion is nowhere near as important as all those human lives. Give me a break.

11. You have an objective measure for this...?

"This lion has received tons more coverage than all those people dying in our proxy wars. .."

You then have an objective measure for this and will present it to us, or is your allegation based simply on your own viewing habits and personal inferences?

My stay may be short lived if that is the general type of thinking around here. I love animals. I have three dogs myself, I am just pointing out the obvious. The death of one lion should not eclipse the deaths of tens (possibly hundreds) of thousands of people being killed in wars. The fact that our 'news' no longer covers the victims of those wars speaks quite loudy to the fact that we are being subjected to media propaganda and distraction (which is also a form of propaganda).

I feel for the lions, but there are many, many more important stories out there not being covered.

Some of the posts were really revolting about what some here wanted to happen to that hunter or all hunters.

It got so bad, I just stayed away.

To some here, animal lives are more important than human.

I am just pointing out an observation. One that I consider quite obvious. We have relatively no coverage of the victims of all these wars the US is financing. There is no coverage whatsoever of the victims being killed in Yemen and Libya by the Saudi and Libyan regimes that the US is supporting. I wonder why that is.

I just found this DU thread that also makes my point. http://www.democraticunderground.com/1016130772

9. stupid human stalking behavior threatened the lions, obviously

Idiot guide basically engages in stalking behavior, following the lions on foot. Lion decides to hold his home ground and stand up for his family, so he (she?) charges. I just hope the locals don't punish the lion by killing it.

You do not stress wild, or even domestic, animals by presenting yourself as a threat to their young.

Lions fight back. Good for the lions.
