Group seeking to put death penalty before Nebraska voters to turn in petitions Wednesday ....

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Paul Hammel

LINCOLN — A group seeking to let Nebraskans decide the fate of the death penalty at the ballot box will turn in its petitions a day early, Wednesday instead of Thursday.

But an official with Nebraskans for the Death Penalty wouldn’t say if the group has enough signatures to suspend the repeal of capital punishment passed by the Nebraska Legislature.

“I’ll save that headline for (Wednesday),” said Chris Peterson, a spokesman for the pro-death penalty group.

Peterson said Tuesday the petitions are being turned in a day early in an attempt to avoid any “oddball” legal challenges that might arise from turning in the petitions on the day of the deadline.

Nebraskans for the Death Penalty must gather roughly 57,000 signatures of registered voters by Aug. 27 to place the question on the 2016 ballot, and 115,000 signatures to suspend the law before a vote. The group also must gather signatures from at least 5 percent of the registered voters in 38 of Nebraska's 93 counties.

So I guess a vote is the next best thing.

Maybe they could circle a thumb, pointed up or down.
