Mormon church sticking with Boy Scouts

Source: Salt Lake Tribune

The Boy Scouts of America isn't going to lose its largest sponsor after all.

"Deeply troubled" after the recent decision to allow openly gay leaders in the BSA, the LDS Church announced Wednesday that the Utah-based faith will stick with the Scouts after threatening last month to bolt from the youth group and form its own international organization for boys.

... Although the LDS Church has allowed — and does allow — openly gay Mormons to serve in church assignments, including the Boy Scouts, these members are deemed to be living the faith's standards. This means they are not acting on their same-sex attractions.

... While the BSA insists that religiously affiliated troops, including those sponsored by the LDS Church, can continue to ban gay leaders, many observers doubt such an exemption can be legally defended.

The new BSA policy allows each Chartering Organization to set its own standards just as each church can set their own membership standards. A Chartering Organization can limit scout leaders to members of its faith and that is fine. If the LDS wants to exclude LGBT from being scout leaders then those leaders can go to another troop that is chartered by another organization. In my district, there were a number of senior leaders in the district who were LGBT but no one cared so long as they did not wear their scout uniforms to a gay pride event.

involvement with BSA is one of the factors that tag the LDS church as All-American rather than on the fringe.
