MSNBC ending Sharpton's daily show
Source: AP
NEW YORK (AP) Al Sharpton is losing his daily show on MSNBC, with the network saying he'll be downshifted to the weekend.
Sharpton's "Politics Nation" has aired at 6 p.m. EDT on weeknights for the past four years at the ratings-challenged news network. MSNBC is in the midst of wholesale changes under NBC News boss Andrew Lack, deemphasizing its left-leaning programming during the daytime hours in favor of more straight news shows.
Sharpton's show occasionally put MSNBC in awkward positions, since he continued his political activism while doing some stories where there was racial controversy while remaining host of a news program.
MSNBC said Wednesday that starting Oct. 4, Sharpton's "Politics Nation" will air at 8 a.m. Sundays. His daily show ends Sept. 4.

(47,450 posts)I tend to grab the remote. He may be an excellent activist and spokesperson for civil rights, but he is an awful television host. I thought maybe he'd grow into it, but I don't see as he ever got better. I rather enjoy him when he is a guest on a program though. Meanwhile, I don't think he was ever comfortable in the job and claims he really would prefer a Sunday morning show.

tishaLA
(14,176 posts)but two hours on Saturday. It's a shame what's happened to UP. It used to be must-watch TV back when Chris hosted it, full of lively intelligent conversation. With Steve, even though I like him, it's less intellectually adventurous and more inside baseball-ish. I loved the policy discussions that used to happen; I can watch a show about horserace politics any day on any cable news station and not wake up at 5 AM Pacific to do it.
Up and Chris Hayes were the perfect match.

(47,450 posts)I really enjoyed "Up" when Hayes hosted it. It reminded me of the stimulating talk shows from the 70s. I like Kornacki, but two straight hours of him is too much some days.

Hasn't been dropped yet, but Thom Hartmann is always complaining about Comcast & how they seem to drop his phone calls. I don't know what's going to happen. I stopped watching MSNBC when they made their last drop of shows. They were the only ones I wanted to watch so decided I could find something else. And they re-run all news shows after 8:00 PM if I wanted to catch Chris or Rachel.

This will leave free speech TV as about the only non-corporate media on the cable as far as I know. It is hard to find of course unless you have dish or direct.

(179 posts)how major networks run to him looking for a sound byte. I'm not an African American so I don't claim to speak for the black community, but it seems to me there's a lot of diversity of opinion out there and the major news media just want controversy without any intellect. That's why I can't watch MSNBC anymore, even though I probably agree with their worldview more than the other networks. Pretty much PBS and NPR for me these days.

PBS still seems to be somewhat independent.
If someone stubs their toe on a Cairo street and gets cholera from it, we get a 5-minute extended correspondent feature on it.
But when we suffer horrible scandals and crimes and discrimination and corruption here in the U.S., they instead play "Americana" with the news.
Only the local news feeds are still worth anything on NPR.

The best at night is Global Business America, on MHz Networks. It's from CCTV (China) and is excellent!...It comes on at 9 pm MT, right after the mysteries.
However, the international mysteries will be going subscription, so I'm not sure how that will affect the schedule at night. It will be news, as it is during the day, just not sure yet of the exact evening lineup.

You can watch live at the above site!!
ALso, our local PBS station which carries MHz on an added channel also streams it....just search for KRWG, Las Cruces...
Later in the day/early evening it's a great lineup of France 24, RT (Russia), and NHK (Japan)....I watch constantly! During the day, there is Ireland, Taiwan, DW (Germany), Ireland, Korea, etc. etc. FANTASTIC!!!

When Ed went, we should have realized they do intend to work steadily toward an all racist, all right-wing, belligerent chicken-hawk link-up around the clock, more Joe-like shows the moment his signs off, throughout the day and night.
As soon as they bought it, the days for progressives were numbered.

(1,278 posts)Rev. Al's show lasted as long as it did due to an alleged quid pro quo between Comcast and the FCC concerning diversity. When Comcast didn't need his support, off he went. He actually got worse ratings than Ed Schultz and Alex Wagner. Warning: Mind numbing raw figures.
I fully expect that Chris Hayes will be next, then Lawrence O'Donnell. For the 2016, should they still be a network in it's current format, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, "Morning Joe", Andrea Mitchell, Chuck Todd, and Tamron Hall should be safe, everyone else could be jettisoned. I can also see MSNBC revert to the America's Talking format that proceeded it, which was essentially right-wing radio for moving pictures.

As soon as my jury duty ended, I came back to the thread to defend Sharpton, not something I generally do after jury duty. I see others who this board would consider liberal defending him too.
I'd say the right is far likelier to be glad to see him gone than liberals. You are knee jerk punching left for the sake of punching left and trying to make yourself right about it.

(2,638 posts)"Around 2006, my youngest daughter Ashley poked me in the stomach and said, 'Dad, why are you so fat?' That kind of hurt my feelings. I grew up in civil rights and politics, so I'm pretty thick-skinned, but when your daughter says it, I started being conscious."
The MSNBC host started losing weight by weaning himself off of meats and starches, then became more strict about his diet in recent years.
On a typical day, Sharpton's breakfast consists of three slices of whole wheat toast along with a Juice Press "Doctor Earth" green juice and English breakfast tea sweetened with Stevia. Lunch is a basic salad with a banana and more tea.
"It's always the same salad: lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, two or three [hard-boiled] eggs cut in and balsamic vinaigrette dressing," says Sharpton of his only solid meal of the day. "My doctor said to me, 'You've got to have some carbs and you need protein,' so he put me on whole wheat toast."
At night, he might have another piece of toast with a second Juice Press juice, this time opting for the brand's watermelon flavor. On weekends, he incorporates a small serving of fish for more protein at his doctor's suggestion.
'The Key to It Is Determination'
"I think the first week, maybe week and a half, I would get hungry every now and then. But the key to it is determination," says Sharpton of keeping cravings at bay and staying within the "normal" weight range per the National Institute of Health's BMI calculator.
And Sharpton says he doesn't miss any of the foods he has given up, even his formerly beloved fried chicken.
"I was a fried chicken junkie," he jokes. "I used to eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but after about three or four weeks, I didn't have a longing for that either."
Sharpton also added exercise to his routine, walking on the treadmill for 20 or 30 minutes five days a week.
"I'm not trying to run the marathon, just tone up," he says. "[I work out] just to keep my blood flowing and to stay active. I didn't want to be flabby since I lost a lot of weight."
Sharpton has no plans on changing his new lifestyle, as he's enjoying the perks of weight loss.
"The best part is the energy and the focus," he says. "I feel like I'm totally in charge of myself. And I've been able to get a very nice new wardrobe! I can wear a lot of stuff that I couldn't wear before."

(4,072 posts)It's not a secret. Sharpton doesn't get the ratings to remain on the air 5 days a week. Simple as that. MSNBC isn't a charity network for liberals.
The network will rebrand and reboot itself. Probably go for mostly hard news with some opinion shows ranging from center right to center left. Maddow will still be their prime time ratings draw at night. The rest will probably be gone within a year. I think weekday evenings will always lean left since surrounding Maddow with right wingers would just end up irritating audiences who tend to like to put a channel on and leave it there so long as their aren't radical changes in tone/politics.

The statements about him "yelling" and "shouting" sound like comments from people who never bothered to watch his show.
MSNBC was never particularly liberal, but Comcast has determined that the few voices that did speak truth to power are to be silenced. Like most corporations, Comcast will smother dissenting voices, but it will not stop their downfall. Young people are not signing up for these services anymore. They will use their cell phones and computers for the media content they want to view.
