2 dead in shooting outside California Social Security office

SALINAS, CALIF. -- Police say a man is in custody after a shooting outside a Social Security Administration office Thursday that left his estranged wife critically injured and her aunt and uncle dead.
Salinas Police Department Cmdr. Vince Maiorana said that the suspect, 50, will be booked into Monterey County Jail on multiple counts of murder.
The suspect's wife, 32, is in a hospital in critical condition. Her cousin, 28, is also hospitalized with gunshot wounds. At an afternoon press conference, Maiorana declined to identify the victims or the suspect until next of kin could be notified.
Maiorana said it appears the wife had left her husband in Southern California, but he tracked her down and confronted the family in the parking lot. "This incident was purely domestic violence," he said.

(23,156 posts)murdered every day by guns. Just wish there would be wall to wall coverage about each and every incident, because each and every one is a tragedy and need not happen. It's not just guns, although they're a huge part, but the culture of violence that pervades this country.

(31,390 posts)This country is going down the toilet. I am so sick of hearing about these shootings...and afraid of encountering
some crazy, mean, armed a$$hole while out and about--since I live in an open carry state.
All this death and violence is so unnecessary. So sad.

(2,593 posts)That statement sounded rather dismissive. Ho hum....just another day, another (or two, or three) gun deaths from your basic everyday domestic violence.

(12,194 posts)CA has strict gun control laws.

(2,807 posts)Nor does the rest of the US. One of the least regulated? Virginia. NowhatImsayin?

(12,194 posts)Doesn't mean I buy it though:
murders by gun:
Ca with strict gun laws: 1,811
VA one of the least regulated: 250

(13,599 posts)California has almost five times the population of Virginia. The per-capita rate of gun deaths is about the same (4.0 vs 4.9 per 100K -- CDC 2013 figures including suicides.) The national rate is 5.1.
Homicides by firearm per 100K:
USA: 2.97
Canada: 0.51
France: 0.06
Germany: 0.19
England/Wales: 0.07
Spain: 0.20
Italy: 0.71
Australia: 0.14
Japan: 0.01
S. Korea: 0.03
beevul
(12,194 posts)It also has the strictest gun control in the nation, which doesn't seem to be working very well, as evidenced by VA having about the same rate without all that CA gun control.

(7,638 posts)has about 30 million more people than Virginia? Or did that escape your studies?

(7,638 posts)not. What is an acceptable murder rate to you? Come on now. Since we need as many guns as the stars in the sky, how many murders are just peachy with you?

(12,194 posts)Non-sequitur.
Address Californias gun control failure, and I might think about addressing your anti-gun talking point - which is strait from the anti-gun talking point manual.
Besides, there is no 'we', when it comes to owning guns, just as there is no "we" when it comes to criminals making criminal choices.
Theres just individuals who are free to make their own choice good or bad.
Leave us alone if we are good, prosecute us if we aren't.

(7,638 posts)all your guns. I am not even close to the anti-gun agenda. And yes I don't mind prying things.

(9,951 posts)I mean in the highly unlikely event of an all out firearm ban?
beevul
(12,194 posts)At least you're honest about being on the fringe and well away from the mainstream on the issue within the Democratic Party itself, not to mention the mainstream of America.
What does that even mean? It appears contradictory, since the anti-gun agenda is to take away mine and everyone elses guns.
Ahhh. So you'll be participating in the gun raids yourself then will you?
Right at the front of the stack?
If so, please bring lunch, and lots of it. I prefer new York strips, baked potatoes and sweet corn on the cob. You may, however, want to take a survey, because while tens of millions may agree on the right to keep and bear arms, we have a very diverse palate.
