Democrat Patrick Murphy backs Iran nuclear deal

Source: Orlando Sun-Sentinel

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, a moderate South Florida Democrat running for the U.S. Senate, announced Monday he will support an international deal designed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons..

Murphy, a former Fort Lauderdale businessman who moved to Jupiter, was especially conflicted, knowing that many Florida voters are wary of the deal, suspicious of Iran and concerned about the impact on Israel.

"This has been the toughest decision of my time in Congress," he said.

...

"On balance, I cannot let possibilities a decade or more in the future, however troubling, outweigh the immediate benefits of this agreement," he said. "Under the current sanctions, Iran's breakout time to obtaining a nuclear weapon is just three months; this agreement expands that to a full year and reduces Iran's stockpiles of low-enriched uranium by 98 percent."

Meanwhile, his fellow Florida House Democrats-- the DNC's feckl, er, fearless leader Debbie Wasserman-Schulz and Alan "The Congressman with Guts" Grayson-- were last seen hiding under their beds from reporters asking them to take a stand on the deal.
