Ottawa (AFP) - Reeling from low oil prices, Canada fell into a recession in the first half of the year, government data confirmed Tuesday, putting Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper on the defensive in the run-up to October elections.
Left takes a strong lead in Canada elections: poll AFP
According to Statistics Canada, the economy contracted 0.5 percent in the second quarter after retreating 0.8 percent in the previous three months.
It is Canada's second recession in seven years and it is the only Group of Seven nation in economic retreat. The figures are the weakest since the 2008 global financial crisis.
The data reflects fears about the health of the global economy as more gloomy evidence emerged of a slowdown in China, a main engine of growth worldwide.

(67,782 posts)....in October. Right now they have a very conservative government, this could be the "Obama recession" that aids the liberals in sweeping into power.
Back in June when I was up there, the exchange rate was about $1.20 Canadian / US dollar, now it's up to $1.32.

(36,063 posts)Deferred maintenance of old old pipelines forced to carry more abrasive tar sands oil is just begging for disastrous spills.
You can bet the shareholders and execs will want to 'recover their lost earnings' after the recession ends and so will defer the maintenance even longer.
Those pipelines can cause as much damage as the keystone would. Polluting the Ogalala aquifer would be horrendous, there isn't a word big and awful enough to express the disaster of a monster oil spill in at the top of Lake Huron

(8,646 posts)That absolutely happens. The ex worked in pipeline maintenance - that's all his company did, he wasn't some subsidiary of an oil company. Generally the oil companies don't always completely defer though, as they like to put on a good show, you know...they just do stupid things like use half of the anti-corrosion chemicals that they were told they needed to keep a pipeline corrosion free. Because, you know, as long as it takes the oil or gas in the pipeline twice as long to eat through the pipeline and cause a spill, then it's all ok. The ex used to get so mad. Because, when there was a blow out under his watch, his ass was on the line. He made sure to document every single recommendation so he could prove that he told the pipeline company what they needed to do - and he would document that they were non-compliant with his maintenance plan.
BTW, this happened during 'good' times as well. Wherever the managers could make an extra buck, they would. What do they care? Most didn't look much further than their next quarterly bonus. They know as soon as there is a downturn, a bunch of them would be laid off.

I hate thinking in these terms, but this is really going to hurt our extremely conservative and secretive Prime Minister, Steven Harper. The reason I hate it, is because this will legitimately hurt lots of Canadian citizens and further divide the east (most of Canada's financial centre) from the west (Canada's oil patch).
But if it helps us heave Steve, it's a blessing in disguise. If it helps usher in an NDP government, then even better!

If the money isn't moving, it means the economy isn't functioning.
Get ready for a bankster-sponsored war, folks.

(3,839 posts)When will people learn that economies do not like conservative economic policies. As soon as the rest of Canada tells the conservatards in Alberta and the Canadian Great Plains to shut up and as soon as Quebec realizes that Harper and the conservatives are just using them, maybe Canada can heal.
