Republican Bush says multiculturalism wrong for US
Source: AP
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush said Tuesday that multiculturalism is bad for the United States, adding that immigrants who close themselves off from American culture deny themselves access to economic rewards.
The former governor of Florida, who speaks fluent Spanish and often touts his success winning Latino votes in a party that badly needs them, addressed the issue in a packed northern Iowa diner as he met people in the crowd.
A young woman approached the candidate and asked how the federal government could help refugees better incorporate into U.S. society.
"We should not have a multicultural society," Bush said, before beginning a longer explanation of his views of what comprises culture in the U.S.

(24,692 posts)polls after his attacks on Mexicans. His support increased when he proposed deporting millions of Hispanic undocumented immigrants. Ben Carson, adding to an already impressive list of daffy prescriptions, suggested last weekend that Muslims should be barred from the presidency despite the Constitution's unambiguous decree that the office is not subject to a religious test.
Trump, Carson and others appealing to the insecurities of conservatives promise to "take back America" in part by turning back the great cultural tide of recent decades. Heavy immigration has muddied American demographics, and the changes appear irreversible due to relatively high birth rates among Hispanics and rising rates of interracial marriage. For some, the result is an anxious Babel -- "This is a country where we speak English, not Spanish," Trump declared at last week's CNN debate.
In speech and demeanor, Bush conveys a steady decency, readily dispensed. But a sizable part of the electorate choosing the next Republican nominee appears to be not only anti-something but very nearly anti-everything. The party's anti-establishment, anti-government, anti-immigrant voters resent the privileged past from which Bush arose. And they resent the pluralistic future to which his personal and political journey leads.
For now, the fractured Republican field enables Bush to pursue the nomination without seeking the support of the party Antis. But can a Republican gain the nomination in 2016 without reckoning with the forces propelling Trump, Carson, Cruz and Fiorina? If Bush succeeds in reaching a point in the campaign where he needs to expand his coalition to include voters on the resentful right, he may discover that he no longer speaks their language.

Multiculturalism and diversity have long been favorite targets of the republican right, both a personal level and an electoral one.
Bush seems to be attempting toe expand his 'coalition' to include the 'resentful right' with his anti-multiculturalism rhetoric.

(884 posts)No such thing as uptopia afterall, but there is a reason why many more seeking to come in then to leave. its the best thing going so far. I don't think the balkanizing of western society via "multiculturalism" serves the west. Assimilation is much better. But that doesn't mean western civ cant adopt the best of what other cultures can bring to the table. I come from a Slavic heritage. Grandparents were immigrants. We have kept some of the traditions; I used to folk dance and sing the songs from the "old country" However we are "all American" at the same time. There was never special accommodations demanded of the adoptive country. The idea was to "become American" in all aspects of the public life. The traditions were remembered in private settings such as thru benevolent socities, the church, etc.

(4,490 posts)I never really thought of multiculturalism as "closing themselves off from American culture". I don't know how to address complaints of multiculturalism when we don't have the same fundamental understanding of the term.
Lychee2
(405 posts)Yes, this is a verbal disagreement about the meaning of "multiculturalism." Jeb is using the word in a negative sense to mean little exclusive islands of different cultures within a larger society (India would be an example of this). But there is another more inclusive sense of "multiculturalism" which means preserving the food, music, dance, literature, etc., of America's varied cultural heritage so that everyone can enjoy them.

Newest Immigrants Assimilating as Fast as Previous Ones, Report Says
The newest generations of immigrants are assimilating into American society as fast and broadly as the previous ones, with their integration increasing over time across all measurable outcomes, according to a report published on Monday by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
Immigrants education levels, the diversity of their jobs, their wages and their mastery of English improved as they lived for more time in the United States, and the gains were even greater for their American-born children, the report concluded.
The force of integration is strong, said Mary C. Waters, a sociologist at Harvard who led the panel of 18 immigration scholars who wrote the more than 400-page report. However we do it, we are good at it, she said.
Professor Waters said the report should allay fears that recent immigrants committed crimes more frequently than Americans, that they were generally in poor health and burden public health care systems, or that they were failing to learn English.

This study will put another hole in the republcans' campaigns to discredit all immigrants (legal and illegal) and convince Americans that diversity and multiculturalism are bad things.

(129,116 posts)originally prompted by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr's bullshit book "The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society" that helped to birth ilk like Dinesh D'Souza and a whole cadre of RW loons. They took the term and twisted it into something completely unrecognizable in order to help maintain European supremacy as "the American Culture".... despite the fact that the "American culture" adopted and amalgamated the cultures of the many who reside here.
Unlike much of the rest of the world, the (post-colonial) U.S. did not evolve as a homogeneous society. Its very existence on the land of what were once hundreds of thousands of indigenous peoples, while dragging many hundreds of thousands more here against their will, guaranteed it to be heterogeneous. And when the "many" among the "one" here demanded inclusion of their contributions to the revolutionary founding and evolutionary history of this country, they were dismissed outright and ridiculed, while the term "multicultural" was turned on its head to become a negative... while other terms like "political correctness" were coined to further marginalize non-western European citizens (or others who did not fit a certain criteria) who attempted to bring some civility to cultural or other-abled discussions.
The fact that we are today arguing over the name of Washington D.C.'s NFL football team - the "Redskins" is a case in point of the complete tone deafness of truly having multicultural versus a distorted monoculture.
