'No one makes alliances with the weak,' says Prime Minister shortly after meeting Putin.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu offered a glimpse into his strategic aspirations Thursday at a Jewish New Year's reception at Mossad headquarters, which also marked 65 years since the intelligence arm's founding.
"We cannot solve the basic problems of the Middle East, he said. They are revealing themselves in their full force, and today our enemy is a double enemy: it is radical Shi'ite Islam that is led by Iran and its proxies, and the Sunni one, currently led by ISIS (Islamic State).
"They fight each other, but they agree that we have no place in this Muslim region, as they see it. The alliances change, they rise and fall and rise again and send arms in various directions, including ours.
"There is one certain rule, Netanyahu intoned: No one strikes an alliance with the weak. Our true defense in the years of the state's existence and the 65 years that the Mossad is marking now, is the strength of the state of Israel. It is this strength that we maintain.

Either Netanyahu is blind to what he is doing, or he hopes that the world is blind to what he is doing.

(6,917 posts)Seems to me that Egypt and Israel were able to make an alliance. Alliances based on fear instead of respect only last as long as a country has the biggest stick. When the other countries sense weakness, they will attack.
Israel has had nuclear weapons for decades and have yet to make alliances with that overwhelming military advantage. Netanyahu is a moron.

(6,699 posts)I am SO disgusted with this man and those that pound his pots and pans behind him. He has been wrong about everything so far related to the wars and civil wars in the Middle East; and now he wants MORE power? Go to hell! Straight to hell.
It is really past time the USA lengthens the rope and either lets them work things out with their regional neighbor, or they sink under their own evil weight.

(10,500 posts)For some reason I thought it was much smaller than that.
I was also surprised to learn that Vietnam had a population of 93 million.
Finally, I would not have guessed that Uzbekistan had 31 million people.
You didn't copy all the way down to Ireland, but its population is 4.6 million according to the link. I had thought it was 8 million.

(10,650 posts)That power exits only because the US foolishly stands right behind Israel no matter how brutally and cruelly it behaves.
wordpix
(18,652 posts)the state of Israel is not brutal and cruel. It's trying to survive. I don't agree with Bibi's BS world power pronouncements or his tactics like building in contested areas. OTOH, I don't see Israelis beheading people and flying commercial jets into buildings in foreign countries. THAT is brutal and cruel.
The US is standing behind Israel b/c 1) the history of Israel as a safe haven for Jews who weren't slaughtered in 1930's-40's Europe and 2) it's a base for US wanting to protect Big Oil. So even if US pols couldn't care less about #1, they do care about #2.
Since according to the US State Department it is anti-Semitic to make comparisons between Israel and WWII Germany I would like to compare Gaza to the Confederate POW camp Andersonville.

(3,967 posts)That was my comment - that's why it wasn't in quotes. What spheres do you think he had in mind? Do you think he meant military? Why?
The rather hostile responses throughout this discussion seem based on the assumption that he meant in all spheres, or certainly in the military sphere. I don't think that makes sense for Israel, and I don't think that's what he meant. I think the spheres I listed do make sense. Economic, knowledge. Not financial, given the way world markets are.
