John Edwards Witness Changes Testimony on the Stand

Source: ABC

A key witness in John Edwards' defense waffled today on the stand, changing his testimony about whether Edwards had told him that money obtained from a wealthy donor was for his "benefit" and was used to provide for his mistress and love child.

Wade Smith, a North Carolina trial lawyer who has represented Edwards, initially denied telling the attorney for wealthy backer Rachel "Bunny" Mellon that Edwards acknowledged the receipt or hundreds of thousands of dollars in what became known as "Bunny money."

Alex Forger, Mellon's lawyer, testified last week that he called Smith in an attempt to find out why the elderly philanthropist was writing so many checks. Forger asked Smith if the money was a gift for Edwards and whether Mellon should declare it as such on her taxes.

Smith got back to Forger telling him, "John Edwards has said he acknowledges now that this was for his benefit," Forger testified last week.

I don't understand why the defense is insisting that JE didn't know about the money from Mellon and Baron and at the same time insisting that he covered it up to avoid his wife's wrath and not for political purposes. The lie about his not knowing was blown apart today- again by the prosecution introducing emails indicating that he did know.

In any case, JE just keeps looking slimier and slimier.

Why won't the judge let them admit evidence that the FEC found money given to Ensign was not campaign spending? Shouldn't that be important?

JE is John the Baptist, and his head is being served up by the MSM that has always hated him.

i voted for john edwards in the california primary. yup, dropped my absentee in the mail the night before he dropped out. to offer any defense in the form of CTs in support of this shitbird only serves to undermine any credibility you may enjoy.

Edwards has been metaphorically scourged at the pillar and is now on the way to being crucified. And unlike Jesus, he is rich, so is therefore unlikely to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

then what value exactly does the FEC report have in proving he didnt? Is there something in there that proves the emails are false? If so then surely they could just introduce that proof itself into evidence you would think.

There are plenty of womanizing politicians, but Edwards is in a category of his own. The whole case is distasteful and there's no one to root for in the lying bunch.

The only ones I feel sorry for are the children and Elizabeth who went to her grave with a broken heart.

If there's such a thing as karma, I hope that Edwards, Hunter and Young get what they deserve.
