Kevin McCarthy formally announces bid for House speaker

Source: Washington Post

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) sent a letter to his House Republican colleagues Monday formally declaring that he will run to succeed outgoing House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio).

The House majority leader, considered the front-runner to succeed Boehner since the surprise resignation announcement, spent the weekend talking to colleagues and gathering support. McCarthy promised his colleagues that he would run a very inclusive leadership team.

“I am running to be your Speaker because I know that the people’s House works best when the leadership you elect listens to members and respects the legislative process entrusted to committees,” he wrote.

Rep. Daniel Webster (R-Fla.), who is considered a longshot, is the only other announced contender to succeed Boehner.

The far-right tea baggers are already complaining. He supports a path to citizenship and signed a couple of budgets.

He never did anything in congress, never chaired anything. He was a poor whip, a definitively bad majority leader, and recruited this crowd of congresspeople (2010).

But nobody sane wants to do it, clearly.
