A Call to ‘Shout Your Abortion’ Draws Debate and Threats
Source: NY Times
It began as a challenge on the Internet: Shout your abortion.
The goal, according to Amelia Bonow, 30, who posted on Facebook on Sept. 19 that she had had an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Seattle last year, was to encourage women who have kept their abortions secret to speak up in an effort to reframe the debate on the subject.
A shout is not a celebration or a value judgment, its the opposite of a whisper, of silence, Ms. Bonow said in an interview. Even women who support abortion rights have been silent, and told they were supposed to feel bad about having an abortion.
But less than two weeks after she and a friend, Lindy West, created the hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion on Twitter, Ms. Bonows building name has been made public, and she has temporarily left her apartment, bothered by angry tweets wishing her dead. The effort went viral and drew more than 150,000 tweets, showing how volatile and emotional an issue abortion still is four decades after the Supreme Court declared it legal.

(19,053 posts)They really are despicable people. On one of the articles comment section, as soon as adoptees began leaving their comments they shut it down. It really sucks to be seen only as someone who narrowly escaped being nothing but abortion. When in fact, I was no more likely to be aborted as the assholes who use us for their propaganda.

What a better way to fan the flames than that.
But I guess that saying that means I am a right winger who is pro life because you are with them or against them...no sanity of non confrontation allowed.

(796 posts)I disagree. When gays came out of the closet and they turned out to be quite ordinary people, it changed the whole attitude toward gays. The same is happening with atheists/non-believers. They are as dull as the rest of us.
The more women who come out and say they had an abortion, the more we recognize them as clerks, drivers, teachers, professionals, girlfriends, wives, and all that is normal.

(18,998 posts)It is unseemly to brag about a medical procedure...IMO.
And doing so will only make those who oppose it stronger with those who might be on the fence. But some seem oblivious to shooting themselves in the foot...again IMO.

Or iow, it is not something to be proud of, nor is it something to feel bad about.
You may not be a right winger, but you sure sound "pro-life".

(18,998 posts)Because it is the perception of others that matters not your view of it.
But I am pro lots of things...like rationalism, and peace and I see none of it in shouting out that you had an abortion...and feeding the fire of right wing hate to satisfy the war like situation.
But then I know my position will only draw fire because we have come to love conflict in this country and I am just a wet blanket.

(15,406 posts)that is afraid of what the right wing might say about you.
And no one is "shouting out that you had an abortion", as I clearly stated in my previous post.

(18,998 posts)What I am afraid of is the constant state of conflict that exists and no one seems to care enough to take the step to shut it down.
But not for me, I am too old to care, but our posterity is in danger.
There are no winners in this conflict but lots of losers.

(1,730 posts)extremist Christians who love to shoot people and burn buildings down. Until they can be locked up in mental facilities where they belong, we must live with their insanity. This action is like waving red meat in front of a pack of mad dogs.
