Fiat Chrysler Reaches Tentative Deal With UAW, Averts Strike

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and the United Auto Workers averted a strike that would have sent the union’s 40,000 members walking off the job.

The UAW’s bargaining committee made “significant gains” in reaching a tentative agreement, the union announced on its website, saying it would make details available pending the results of a vote Friday. Fiat Chrysler confirmed the accord Thursday in a statement and said it can’t discuss specifics.

“We heard from our members, and went back to FCA to strengthen their contract,” UAW President Dennis Williams said in the union’s statement. “We have made real gains and I look forward to a full discussion of the terms with our membership.”

A strike would have disrupted Fiat Chrysler’s production amid the company’s streak of 66 consecutive U.S. monthly sales gains and clouded an auto industry that has been a rare bright spot in U.S. manufacturing, with deliveries on pace for the best year in more than a decade. A walkout may have prevented the UAW from moving on to talks with General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. that could yield more lucrative contracts.

1. Two-Tier Pay Structures must end!

"This is the second tentative agreement FCA and the union have reached. Last week, UAW members overwhelmingly rejected a previous proposal, saying it didn't go far enough in restoring benefits workers lost in previous contracts. Union workers made concessions in recent years to help struggling automakers return to health. But now that the companies are making money, members want a bigger share.

The deal rejected last week included pay raises, the potential for increased profit sharing and a $3,000 signing bonus. But members are seeking an end to the current two-tier pay structure, more specific guarantees of new vehicles for U.S. factories and a return of cost-of-living pay raises."

--------

Eliminating "two-tier pay structure" is essential, this is the insidious ploy where the corporations intimidated older union members into selling newer workers down the drain by agreeing to allowing much much lower wages and benefits for the newer workers. It's nasty. The older workers, desperate to keep their jobs and retirement plans succumb to all too human fears and essentially break faith with the younger workers. I am so glad that the UAW is fighting hard to end "two-tier" exploration schemes.
