HuffPo/BREAKING: McCarthy Drops out of race for Speaker of House

Source: Huffington Post

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) pulled out of the running for House speaker on Thursday, according to multiple reports.

House Republicans had been scheduled to pick their candidate for speaker on Thursday. McCarthy reportedly told his caucus at the meeting that he was pulling out. The election for the Republican candidate for the next speaker has also been postponed.

McCarthy was considered the top contender to replace House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who will retire from Congress at the end of this month.

McCarthy has been haunted by recent comments in which he praised the House Select Committee on Benghazi for hurting Hillary Clinton politically.

When I was in school civic was not taught except as a part of "social studies" which in itself seemed to be a poor substitute for a history class. Somehow that was supposed to be progressive, don't ask me why. I'd like to know if civics is still taught at most high schools; I doubt that it is. I'd love to be proven wrong.

The peanut butter cup has finally melted all the way through, and the thin shell of evil Republican leadership can no longer contain the oozing mass of stupid that is the modern Republican Party.

Mark my words, this is a disaster so large that I think our President now has a better-than-even chance of getting his own budget passed by Congress both this year and next, simply because he's the only one who did Congress' job and submitted a complete budget that can be easily passed.

The way he's gonna do it is kind of dark. When the government defaults, something secret happens which compels lawmakers to approve the President's own proposal. We saw that happen in 2011 and John Boehner has completely given up on the House's bullshit every year since to make sure that it doesn't happen again.

But now it's gonna happen again for sure, probably in only a few weeks, and probably again next year. So our President has a shot at having his two most effective years as a lame duck while the GOP still controls Congress and the Supreme Court. Because Republicans are THAT stupid, now, ha ha ha!

I've seen it over and over with school boards and town councils. The members will try to choose their weakest individual to lead because the members know they can push the person around. The net effect is a group incapable of accomplishing anything of substance, and is often the symptom of a failing organization.

When a school board or town council elects a strong leader, the civic organization is able to accomplish more.

Thu Oct 8, 2015, 01:23 PM

Now if the Democrats were smart about this what they should do is go to the few sane Republicans in the House and say tell you what. Put forward a sane candidate for House Speaker - such as Charlie Dent (R-PA) or Chris Smith (R-NJ) - and we will vote for that candidate instead of throwing our votes away by voting for one of our own in a contest we couldn't win.

It wouldn't be perfect and there's no telling what sort of swing a "sane" Republican might do once elected. But on the other hand that might neuter the teabaggers and stop their dreams of realizing teabag glory in the Speaker's chair.

Thu Oct 8, 2015, 03:01 PM

Either they let the crazies have the speaker's gavel, and cause a disaster, or....

They put forth (if they can find one) a sane person, who can only win by alienating the crazies and win only with the support of Democrats who, as has been pointed out, can't pick the speaker anyway. BUT...if they do that, they let the crazies scream that their speaker is a RINO who wasn't even the choice of their party, and is really a Democrat in disguise (hmmm, come to think of it, this whole scenario is starting to sound familiar, but that's for another day). There isn't ONE Republican member of the House about whom that can be truthfully said, but "what's truth got to do, got to do with it?" That's one thing Teabaggers never let get in their way.

So, here is their choice: a nut case who won't get anything done and cause a mess, or a non-nut case who will spend over half his time defending his Republican credentials against accusations from other Republicans. It's a lose-lose proposition. (To any Republican trolls reading this, that's "loose-loose" in Republicanese, in case you can't find English-Republicanese on your Google translator).

Not that I feel the least bit sorry for him. If they can not elect a speaker by the end of the month the only thing they could do is elect a temporary speaker and then have elections. Boehner was suppose to step down at the end of the month. I just don't see how he can do it.

Uncontrolled chaos and destruction of government is always a wonderful thing according to the Tea Party.

America can only be strengthened by total annihilation of our government and elimination of law and order, I guess.

Who fucking cares?
What is the difference between one asshole blocking everything Obama or the Democrats want to do and another asshole blocking it?
So long as it is good for the wealthy and fuck everyone else.

I guess I "care" insomuch as this development puts it on display. for all voters
to see, the utter disarray and lack of any semblance of responsible governing.

I don't know how anyone with 1/2 a brain could have expected anything else,
when you elect people to govern who openly & vehemently HATE government;
but there you have it.

This can't help but help the Dems in 2016 election IMHO.

He was so stupid! He had no clue! There's no way he could possibly handle the job. He was FUCKING PERFECT!

What are the chances that there is yet another knuckle-dragging drooling idiot behind him in line to be Speaker of the House, huh? You don't just find 'em that dumb, except at a Republican caucus....

Hey, wait a minute....

2014. Where were you? Staying home watching Kardashians? Watching Mob Wives? Watching crap? You didn't know there was an election? Oh. It's time for Democrats to take back the House in 2016, but with gerrymandering, it is very difficult.

gerrymandering? it is what it is, so we must change it. Uphill? yep. Which is
exactly why it's going to take a massive political revolution, as called for by Bernie.
