Flint Officials Are No Longer Saying the Water Is Fine

Source: New York Times

FLINT, Mich. — All along, through months of complaints from residents of this city about the peculiar colors and odors they said were coming from their faucets, the overriding message from the authorities here was that the water would be just fine.

Yes, there had been a boil order when fecal coliform bacteria turned up in some neighborhoods last year. And yes, the extra chlorine that was pumped in to solve that problem seemed to create another one — increased levels of a different contaminant.

Still, the guidance from Flint officials about the temporary water supply they switched to in 2014 — partly to save money — sounded assuring. In a notice sent to residents in July, city officials declared: “This is not an emergency. If a situation arises where the water is no longer safe to drink, you will be notified within 24 hours.”

First, the city advised residents to run their water for five minutes before using it, to use only cold water for drinking and cooking, and to install lead-removing water filters. Then county officials issued an emergency advisory recommending that people not drink Flint’s water unless it is tested for lead or filtered.

And last Friday, after corroborating that lead levels had risen in some children, state officials called for the water to be tested at all Flint public schools and for stepped-up efforts to replace lead service lines; they also promised $1 million to provide filters.

Officials met here on Wednesday afternoon, and talks were underway, officials said, for additional solutions that could come as early as Thursday. Gov. Rick Snyder said on Twitter late Wednesday that he planned to make an announcement about the situation on Thursday morning.

Private groups have raced to donate bottled water to schools, where the water fountains are now shut off, as well as filters to families who cannot afford them. Saying “we’re just in a heck of a bind,” Robert J. Pickell, the Genesee County sheriff, began serving bottled water and food that need not be cooked in water to hundreds of inmates in the county jail. Some residents have begun washing their children and pets with bottled water.

This is what happens when you have a Republican led state, with a Governor that appointed Emergency Managers mandated over the elected governance --- of what was suppose to be a Democracy Elected Local Governmental Unit in Flint, Michigan -- despite the will of its residents. A complete, utter and downright SHAMEFUL and possibly criminal cover up of lead filled water for over a year, in Flint.

My wife and I still have family there, parents and siblings with families and a newborn.

Gee what could possibly go wrong when the state overrides the will of the people.

My wife said just last night that we need to try again to recall Snyder.

5. They Changed the Recall Law.....

They being the GOPee in Michigan.....

*NOTE: Due to legislation that was enacted in 2012, there are several new requirements that affect the overall timeframes in the recall process. In particular:
*Recall petition language may not be submitted for approval during an officeholder’s first and last six months of office;
*Recall petitions may not be circulated while an appeal is pending;
*Signed/circulated recall petitions may not be filed during the first six months or last six months of the officer’s term of office, if the term of office is two years or less; or during the first or last year of the officer’s term of office, if the term of office is greater than two years;
*Recall petition signatures dated more than 60 days before the filing are invalid.

https://www.michigan.gov/documents/sos/Recal_Summary_for_Counties_426253_7.pdf

The BOLD one above is HUGE for trying to recall Snyder as the number of signatures required is 25% of the last vote total in the 2014 election which stands at: 1,605,034 votes for Snyder x .25% = 401,259 with a bumper of .10% for rejected or invalid signatures = 40,426 = 401,259 + 40,126 = 441,552 in 60 DAYS -- or in other words -- a lot of signatures in a short amount of time.

Also, the other hiccup. Michigan's Constitution not air tight on if a Governor is recalled a Special Election MUST take place. It says, it MAY take place - which means Lt. Gov. Brian Calley (another Republican) could possibly serve out the rest of Snyder's term, until December 31, 2017.

Or in other words.....we are F**K**G stuck with Snyder in one form or the other. #SMH.....

The State Senate is only up for a total vote in 2018....or the last year Rick Snyder is in office. That was why winning or gaining and not losing Seats in the State Senate was SO IMPORTANT in 2014. However, Lon Johnson --the former Michigan Democratic Party head -- completely BLEW OFF that important need when his "strategy" re-elected Rick Snyder and lost more seats in the State House and Senate.

But, this is what the majority of the voters asked for when they elected Republicans. This is on the people of Michigan, Kansas, Texas, Ohio, etc., and the choices they made when they voted!

In the case of Kansas the voters decided that after all the screwing they took, they still wanted to be kissed and put Brownback and the Republicans back into the driver's seat!

Personally I've reached the point where I'm starting not to care...about states where people seem to be inherently stupid and keep voting against there own interests...

At all what the People of Michigan have faced.

Starting with P.A. 4 of 2011 -- the Emergency Manager Law that specifically targeted Majority, communities of African-American population -- which assigned a dictator (Emergency Manager) that solely control the financial, operational and governing stance of those communities.

Now, I'm sure you know communities of color normally support Democrats right?

Unless they feel their votes don't matter.

Also, Snyder dubbed at "One Tough Nerd" in the 2010 Election - had MANY (sadly) Caucasian DEMOCRATS cross lines and vote for him, instead of at the very least not voting for Governor at all, if they could not manage to "hold their nose" and vote for Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero.

Why would they have to "hold their nose" and vote for Bernero, I have no idea as Bernero would have made 150% better Governor than Snyder -- but in their eyes -- non-Government Official (who never served in government-- ever)the Multi-Millionaire, Ex-CEO of the Bankrupt Gateway Computers -- which was sold to China no less -- was better than a proven Local Politician (Mayor of Michigan's Capitol City) who previously was a State Legislator and Senator. #SMH....

African-Americans HEAVILY supported Bernero, but African-Americans only make up about 7-10% of Michigan's Total Population.

In 2014, the former Head of Michigan's Democratic Party -- Lon Johnson - wasted plenty of money and time backing the Ex- One Term Congressman Mark Schauer (D) -- who might be a good guy but left plenty on the table as a campaigner until the last 5 months of his campaign.

Plus --- it did not help that Schauer's home ties are to Howell, Michigan. Although Schauer had no known ties with this group -- Howell in African-American Michiganders minds is the home of the KKK in the State -- and will always be despite many attempts to "make this disappear" over the years.

Lastly, when the Emergency Manager Law -- P.A. 4 was repealed by a 4% margin on a referendum vote, the GOPee in Michigan, three weeks later the GOP magically passed P.A. 436 --- basically the same damn law with new powers for E.M.'s to run rough shot over the deep financial operations of communities, fire elected officials and sell off public lands/properties -- and make decisions like the disconnecting of Flint's Water System from Detroit to the Toxic Flint River.

Then they -- the GOP that is -- changed Michigan's Referendum Law --- along with the recall one in 2012.

So --- yea -- no offense -- but the issues in Michigan is MUCH DEEPER than "That's the Government They Voted For" because sure as hell the People of Flint, Detroit (which was forced into Bankruptcy by a E.M. and whose Public Schools are STILL RAN by a E.M.), Benton Harbor, Ecorse, Allen Park, Inkster, Muskegon and Muskegon Heights ---plus many more Majority Minority Populated School Districts -- sure as hell did NOT VOTE FOR RICK SNYDER --- either time.

you have to use distilling or a reverse osmosis filter to get rid of lead in water. I hope they are giving out the correct filters to people. Even a little bit of lead can damage the brain of a child.

While stupid fucking politicians refuse to raise taxes on the mega-rich to maintain the nation's underlying support system.

How about this idea: let the billionaires and their families who fund the GOP drink nothing but bottled water from Flint for a year and see how god-damn fast they'll change their tune.
