U.S. military bars University of Phoenix recruiting

Source: Marketwatch

The Department of Defense on Thursday placed the University of Phoenix system on probation, barring the for-profit school giant from recruiting on military bases and preventing troops from using federal money for classes.

The Defense Department provided few details on the move, but the university system APOL, -8.98% has been subjected to scrutiny by the department and Congress for months. In June, Sen. Dick Durbin (D., Ill.) sent a letter to Defense Secretary Ash Carter requesting an investigation into, among other things, the school’s recruitment efforts on bases.

The university system, with some 200,000 enrolled civilian and military students, is a major provider of classes to active duty troops, reservists and National Guardsmen, and provides on-campus and distance learning.

“The institution will not be authorized access to DoD installations for the purposes of participating in any recruitment-type activities,” said Dawn Bilodeau, chief of the Defense Department’s Voluntary Education program. “Further, no new or transfer students at the institution will be permitted to receive DoD tuition assistance.”

Tuition assistance will be much much better spent on not-for-profit public institutions.

My step-son fell prey to one of those blood sucking institutions, he was pressured to take out far too much in student loans. All for a mediocre education on outdated equipment.

I don't know a single person in a capacity to hire or fire someone who would even consider someone with that on their resume. I would take somebody with no diploma and more experience. Showing you actually paid money for the sham diploma is actually a sign of poor judgement.

Too many of the people who fall for these horrible bloodsuckers really do have poor judgment, but who doesn't when they're young and/or desperate to better themselves? I never knew anything about UofP when I was overseas but saw soldiers studying materials their families sent them from the school that had been tailored to fit their 'unique' situations. So, they could be getting shot at and earning a bogus degree at the same time. A lot of them were young people or even older and married and not very savvy. If the education office had brochures on it and their GI Bill was paying for it, it had to be legit, right? Uncle Sam wouldn't let them get scammed surely. Dummies. There there were, with great big bullseyes on their asses, so defense contractors and oil companies could get rich. Of course Uncle Sam wouldn't let them get scammed.

Here is a quote from that article:
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Paul Rieckhoff, president of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, said the Pentagon's action was "good and long overdue news."

"IAVA members have been taken advantage of and manipulated by many for-profit 'schools,' but the University of Phoenix is constantly reported as the single worst by far," he said. "Too many of our members have been left by the University of Phoenix with their new GI Bill burned out, loads of debt and a degree they can't use."
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

These two paragraphs in my opinion describe the problem completely. University of Phoenix. "worst by far"..cares only about money and nothing else. ..In a nutshell...It is a hard sell, Then go to hell..
...and..." loads of debt and a degree they can't use."

7. There's a loophole in the new GI Bill that for-profit institutions exploit.

These scam schools are partially to blame, but a lot of the blame rests with that loophole. It needs to be done away with.

Paul's been an absolutely fierce advocate on this issue.

11. UoP = Failure Factory

I have a good friend who took out student loans at UoP and graduated with a MAOM or Master of Arts in Organizational Management about 15 years ago. She is now 65 years old and has been underemployed or unemployed ever since she graduated. Her Student Loan debt is more than $75K and she can't find a job because of age discrimination.

UoP set her up to fail. The Apollo Group is a corrupt organization and their owners belong in prison. I am sure there are many other horror stories just like my friend's.
