California governor signs crisis pregnancy centers bill

Source: AP

By JULIET WILLIAMS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Crisis pregnancy centers that discourage women from getting abortions in California will be required to provide information about abortions and other services under legislation Gov. Jerry Brown has approved.

The measure imposes the first such statewide rule, after local communities around the country have tried similar efforts.

Pregnancy crisis centers often are operated by abortion opponents, and critics say workers imply the facilities provide a range of medical care and have credentials they do not possess.

Under the new law, the centers will be required to offer information about affordable contraception, abortion and prenatal care. Those that are unlicensed also must inform clients of their status.

'Unlicensed' is probably the norm as I'm sure most of the bad ones are, and no doubt are going to be found-out, and pushed out

Crisis pregnancy centers should be required to required to maintain at least two board-certified physicians on premises as well as at least two nurses. Furthermore, their facilities should be required to meet those of minor surgical centers.

Not only that, their so-called "counselors" should be made liable for civil lawsuits if their "advice" should endanger the health of their clients.

Crisis centers are an abomination. We have one across the street from our local PP office. They are pretty representative of their ilk. Every time I drive past, I want to stop and offer to distribute as many of their flyers as they will give me, so I can stick them in a dumpster.

But here's the problem with this law.

Unlicensed folk are free to spread all the lies they want. Look at Westboro Baptist.

Even licensed folk may be able to duck the rule if what they are saying is accurate (if far from complete).

If the First Amendment only protected speech we agreed with, thee wouldn't be a need for it. We all get to speak precisely because these assholes have the right to speak.
