Woman fights off intruder with sword, medieval combat skills

Source: Portland Press Herald

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indiana woman says her training in medieval combat helped her corner a home intruder.

The Indianapolis Star reports 43-year-old Karen Dolley of Indianapolis threw punches until she had the man cornered during the Thursday night break-in. She then kept him subdued with a Japanese sword she keeps near her bed.

Dolley says she learned to fight as a teenager in the Society for Creative Anachronism, a group that recreates skills of the Middle Ages. She also skates with roller derby team Naptown Roller Girls.

The chrome flakes off and the metal underneath rusts or tarnishes. Sometimes it's greyish like zinc.

The edge won't stay sharp either.

Real swords are forged like spring steel. They sharpen well and hold their edge and don't rust. They're much more expensive too.

You can use a decorative sword against an attacker but if you are in actual combat it will get bent or broken.

They're good for practice and sparing.

Golly! It's like I'm talking to ol' Wayne himself, misspelling and all. Your desire for bloodshed is noted.

My concern, which you clumsily and predictably fail to understand, pertains to the endless proliferation of the shoot-first-and-ask-no-questions mentality that's lately so popular in our fine culture. According to that mentality, the answer is Guns! Guns! Guns! and if the answer isn't Guns! Guns! Guns! then the question isn't worth asking.

I do not share the NRA's creed that an intruder automatically deserves death.

Would the situation have been better if she'd shot this dumb asshole? How do you think she'd feel if she'd killed him when she clearly didn't have to? Sure, she might have been justified, but do you think she'd be better off?

First, despite what the media makes you think, crime, according to DOJ numbers is at lows the country hasn't seen since the 1990's.

I have no problem with this being resolved without the criminal being seriously injured, however I'm sure she is happy that she was able to defend herself.

There are others out there who aren't young enough or strong enough to defend themselves the same way this woman was able to. What is your recommendation for them, don't resist?

So your question is silly.

If, as you note, crime is at an all time low, then why the fuck do we need all of these guns? Or will you now quote the other NRA talking point that crume is low *because* of the guns?

As for your oher loaded question, sure. If a person can demonstrate a real need that is better served by a gun than by any other option, let them have a gun for self-defense. That doesn't mean 20 assault rifles with huge clips and armor-piercing rounds.

Also, subject them to a nationally standardized background check and require them to register on a national database. Otherwise you're not serious about responsible gun ownership.

Oh look, the "If you don't agree with my absurd ideas, you aren't serious about responsible gun ownership" argument.

No to providing a "need" to won a gun. No a national database.

You already have a standardized background check in the NICS system for all sales that cross state lines or from FFL dealers.

With more guns in circulation then ever before, more states allowing CCW and crime at lows we the country hasn't seen in decades, that blows a gaping hole in the more guns = more crime theory.

Why should we have to prove a need to exercise a enumerated right?

As for your oher loaded question, sure. If a person can demonstrate a real need that is better served by a gun than by any other option, let them have a gun for self-defense. That doesn't mean 20 assault rifles with huge clips and armor-piercing rounds.

Again, why should we, as American citizens, have to prove a need to exercise an enumerated right?
Why shouldn't any law abiding citizen be able to own as many firearms as they want?
Armor piercing rounds?
Those are banned for civilian use many moons ago.

Also, subject them to a nationally standardized background check and require them to register on a national database. Otherwise you're not serious about responsible gun ownership.

I support a UBC, but not registration.
The Govt. has no business nor right to know what firearms I own, and the ACLU opposes registration also on the grounds of invasion of privacy.

So you get to decide who is or who isn't serious about firearm ownership?
Ummm, no, I own numerous firearms and I'm a very responsible firearm owner.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other you see; although I certainly realize we often need to hold ourselves to a lower standard than we hold others to if our aim is to indict them for the same actions we engage in, regardless of how we may rationalize it otherwise.
