Source: ABC News
Police say a shooting at the ZombiCon gathering in Florida killed one person and injured four others.
Lt. Victor Medico of the Fort Myers Police Department said the shootings began at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, The News-Press reported ( http://newspr.es/1jMJamf ). He said the four people injured were being treated at a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, and police were searching for a suspect. Fort Myers police did not immediately return a call seeking details.
The annual festival had been expected to draw more than 20,000 fans dressed as zombies, the newspaper said.
A statement on the ZombiCon Facebook page said organizers were saddened by the news and the group takes the safety of its patrons very seriously.

(5,604 posts)unthinking consumerism, and group-think. I think its unfair that gun culture gets linked to this, especially for the victims of this incident. And fwiw I'm not a gun owner or advocate.

(2,529 posts)Look at the most popular books in the zombie genre. The Zombie Fallout Series, by Mark Tufo. The military and Special Forces zombie novels out there like the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot sets and the Dirk Patton Plague Book novels. The Extinction Cycle series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. So much of the genre is geared toward survivalist and military fighters who use automatic weapons and every type of gun imaginable to kill squadrons of the undead in large numbers. The violence and gore depicted are very appealing to many of the readers. Sure, a lot of us twisted souls like that kind of thing in the dystopian fantasy-horror milieu that it's portrayed in, but there are some genuine headcases out there who actually get too involved and lost in it and make it their reality. What's fun and exciting reading for the rest of us can be fodder for someone who really believes what he's reading.
But, yeah, also, it could just be some guy who's an asshole or has a grudge. But, you're right. Some of the reviews I've read about these books on Amazon have been from people who have a distinct bloodlust or are Preppers or extreme right-wingers who love their guns. Especially the reviewers on Day By Day Armageddon.

(915 posts)Then the NRA crowd can blame liberals and gun control supports (i.e. previous victims of gun crimes) for the catastrophes caused by having everyone in a theatre, sporting event, public venue armed?
'Honestly officer, I thought the cell phone was a gun and so I shot first.'
'I was putting my gun away and it went off and shot the poor kid in the head. I feel so bad, but not my fault.'
Followed by the endless NRA platitudes of more education for a bunch of people who can't even point to China on a map.

(417 posts)I take part in some fan culture, and these kinds of conventions are usually really crowded and chaotic. It's not unusual to be harassed, or groped if you are a female. A lot of people are wearing costumes and sometimes there are 100 people in roughly the same costume, it's easier to get away with things you probably wouldn't during a normal time. Frankly, I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner. As someone pointed out up thread gun culture and zombie culture do go hand in hand.
I've worked jobs shipping ammunition and this was and probably continues to be a popular seller

on edit: To be fair, I'm pretty sure it's just for target shooting.
