New Mexico thrift-store workers find $290,000 in bonds

Source: Omaha World Herald-AP

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. (AP) — Two thrift-store workers in Truth or Consequences found more than clothes and knickknacks in the donation box, instead finding an envelope stuffed with $290,000 in U.S. savings bonds.

The Albuquerque Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1jRQGML ) that an employee of the Community Health Foundation Thrift store found the envelope while sifting through donated items. The manager called the police and turned the bonds over to an officer who happened to know the man in whose name the bonds were subscribed.

Police say they contacted the man, who recalled the exact amount of the bonds and said he was unaware his personal property had been donated. He had recently been moved into an assisted living center and an advocacy group acting as his guardian had cleaned out his apartment.

which makes tossing them all the more bizarre

The Feds would eventually find out, even if they went unclaimed

At maximum care in a dementia unit that might last 25 maybe 30 months

Doesn't sound like dementia.
Numerical skills are among the first to go.

At least he's in assisted living, costing much less than nursing care.

sucks to get old

as our population ages we need to find good ways to care the the population that is growing infirm.

not sure assisted living is a good option

think i would prefer a trip to a gun shop for a quicker alternative

Still a lot of autonomy left in assisted living.
Many people thrive in assisted or independent living, as compared to isolation of living alone, not eating well, etc.

I hope the gentleman adjusts well and has length of days, enjoying the fruits of his labors.

He knew the value of his bonds, and not that his stuff had been given away. Isn't that stealing by the "advocacy group" whoever they are...
