Obama to Veto $612 Billion Defense Bill Over Funding, Cuba

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON — Oct 21, 2015, 7:29 PM ET

The White House says President Barack Obama will veto a sweeping $612 billion defense policy bill, citing objections over how the measure is funded.

Obama will veto the bill Thursday afternoon in the Oval Office.

Obama also disapproves of provisions in the bill that would complicate his pledge to close the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

It's the first time Obama has rejected the measure. Presidents have signed the bipartisan bill into law annually for more than 50 years.

this isn't a tactical error. Republican'ts will blame Senate Democrats for not over riding the veto. Not all defense spending is in red states. Blue state Senators will be forced to choose between Obama's veto and constituent's pay checks. Nothing good will come from this for Democratic Senators hopes to retake the Senate in 2016.

Tell all the defense industries they have 5 years to restructure and provide something other than weapons of death. We'll keep paying you the same as today to ease the transition. Too many people get their paycheck from these companies and I don't want to hurt them. I think a transition policy that keeps them in business is the best alternative. Hell, we'd be spending the money anyway so why not get something from it?

A nice idea but they would spend all energy just trying to reverse the plan

if they played budget games to get around Congress' own sequester limits.

Good for him.
