Mormon Church Bars Same-Sex Couples and Their Children
Source: NYTimes
Children of same-sex couples will not be able to join the Mormon Church until they turn 18 and only if they move out of their parents homes, disavow all same-sex relationships and receive approval from the churchs top leadership as part of a new policy adopted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In addition, Mormons in same-sex marriages will be considered apostates and subject to excommunication, a more rigid approach than the church has taken in the past.
The new policies were contained in a handbook for lay leaders that was disseminated on Thursday to those who administer the churchs 30,000 congregations around the world. The church made no public announcement of the change, but it was leaked to the news media and confirmed by a church spokesman.

In case anyone had any doubts about the leadership of the Mormon Church or its intentions, this truly cements them into the status of a 'cult'.
Because the children should be punished by God for something they have entirely nothing to do with.... isn't that nice? But it truly shows how deeply afraid the Mormon Church is of a little free thinking.... apparently they don't want their members to even get to know someone who has positive things to say or show about gay relationships. Pathetic.

I'm still angry over their refusal to let me join the Idiot's Club.
How dare they not let me in!

They couldn't handle my being a protestant. Gay would would be too far outside their parameters.

(8,732 posts)To ask a child to "disavow" their own parents is heinous and evil...just more of those "Christian family values" showing through.

(10,500 posts)This is absolutely horrible. The kids are banned too? From Heavenly Father's one true church? They have to disavow their families?
They did something similar to Madison Brown, daughter of polygamist Kody Brown. She wanted to join the LDS Church, and had rejected polygamy for years, but that wasn't enough. They insisted that she disavow her family. When she wouldn't, they refused to baptize her.

(6,398 posts)...but it is their religion. And as much as I hate it, I don't advocate regulation of religion...within reason.
Plus, not all Mormons may agree with this. I know some who vote D....and they live in Utah.

(10,500 posts)I wonder what she will think about this.
What makes this so much worse than other types of exclusion is that they are rejecting the children of gay couples. And when they are 18 they must move out and disavow their families.
I have never heard of another church going quite this far.

(6,398 posts)Catholics aren't supposed to use contraception....obviously, that hasn't worked out so well.
Same sex couples clearly won't be in the Mormon Church. And I would think the children of such couples wouldn't be interested in joining the Mormon Church either.
As for disowning family...good luck on enforcing that. Those who do, are obviously on board in doing so anyway. This just gives them cover.

(10,500 posts)I think it is a lot easier for a Protestant to simply go to a different Protestant denomination, or even for a Catholic to go to an Episcopal church.
First, with Mormonism there isn't much of an alternative to the LDS Church.
Second, I sense that some gay Mormons do see the Salt Lake based LDS Church as Heavenly Father's Church.
I do believe that there are inactive Mormons who send their kids to church with family, with friends or by themselves. This includes gay Mormons, or a parent who is living with someone out of wedlock, or even someone who is sexually active outside of marriage, and therefore in violation of the Law of Chastity. Many of these people do still send their kids to the LDS Church, even as they themselves do not attend.
I think there will be kids who currently attend church that will be denied full membership in the future. They may not be ordered to stop attending, but they will not be baptized, or ordained to the priesthood if they are boys, or allowed to go on missions. That effectively kicks them out.
I am not sure what they will do with children who have already been baptized or are already ordained to priesthood, let alone kids who are already off on a mission. Will they be forced to disavow their families or face excommunication?

(6,398 posts)The Mormon Church does focus on a strong family unit....its one of the reasons why many ex-Protestants end up joining...and why Evangelicals have a non-stop anti-Mormon campaign (I could go on and state that Protestants could have a strong family unit too, if they stopped spending their resources on ineffectual politics and refocused on family and community...but that's a different topic). So I could see why, if you don't agree with a position of the Church, wanting your kids to have a good chance at having a strong family, has its appeal.
As far as the Mormon Church enforcing it....I just don't see them doing so with an iron fist. Its impractical to do so. I see it as more of creating a policy and invoking it when useful. Should someone who fits the policy start advocating inclusion, recognition, etc. of same sex marriages, gay rights, etc. then this policy can be invoked to give them the boot real fast.
If a child from a same sex marriage grows up and denounces their parents...they are going to trumpet his/her story.
If its the same situation and they don't say anything...doubt the church would say anything. Basically don't ask, don't tell.
But if they are vocal....invoke the policy and out they go.
Just the nature of churches in general. Keep you around in the view that you may be converted. But if you advocate change in de-facto doctrine, they give you the boot. Hence why a heretic like me can't join any of the main stream religions.

(1,730 posts)as many gay folks, percentage wise, as any of the other cults. Your neighbors will probably send the poor kid off to church "therapy" and when that doesn't work, they'll disown him.
