Michigan Governor Puts a Halt on Welcoming Syrian Refugees After Paris Attacks
Source: Haaretz
Michigan's Republican governor, who has bucked many party leaders by welcoming Syrian refugees, is putting the efforts on hold following the deadly attacks in Paris.
Gov. Rick Snyder said in a statement Sunday that the Midwestern state is postponing efforts to accept refugees until federal officials fully review security clearances and procedures. He added that Michigan is "proud of our rich history of immigration" but that the "first priority is protecting the safety of our residents."
"There will be difficult days ahead for the people of France and they remain in our thoughts and prayers," he said. "It's also important to remember that these attacks are the efforts of extremists and do not reflect the peaceful ways of people of Middle Eastern descent here and around the world."
Snyder spokesman Dave Murray said the governor wasn't available for further comment.

(73,631 posts)With the largest Muslim-American and Arab-American communities in the country, you'd think that this state would be the best place to inculcate a sense of community in new arrivals. That's the best way to destroy pockets radicalism in the West.
Give people a sense of belonging.

(85,373 posts)and the Muslim communities are in the cities, which Michigan's GOP starves to death anyway. They hate cities: cities are engines of change and progress and freedom and liberty and the interactions of classes of people...
I live in the relatively safe, nominally progressive enclave of Ann Arbor, and even so there's a lot of subterranean GOP sympathizing going on here. I was told to my face that Bernie Sanders is "just a socialist" by one old hag.

Bringing in a relative handful of refugees isn't "coddling;" it's basic decency, especially given that our hands are not clean in Syria.
Pandering to fear shouldn't be something we do.

(198 posts)I do think we should set some sort of screening process about who is coming in from the Middle East. Unfort it won't be perfect and some bad guys might get in. But an effort should be made to truly help the syrians who have suffered.

(53 posts)You really think DHS and ICE wouldn't already have a vetting process in place for any and all refugee applications, not just those from Syria? You make it sound like there's either some kind of open-border policy in place where anyone can just buy a plane ticket and come over, or that refugees are being chosen by random number generator without any regard for their background and history.
"You don't know who is coming into the country" is the kind of fear mongering and "water muddying" phrase that I would expect to hear from far-right anti-immigration groups, not right here on DU.

(23,369 posts)And, according to some news reports, the attack in Paris seems to have been done by sunni muslims, so maybe we can test and admit the shiite muslim?
I think all mideast migration will be affected by this.

(23,369 posts)This is a federal issue, not Snyder's.
But, it plays well to his supporters.
