Exclusive: After Paris, Americans see Trump, Clinton as most able to address terrorism - poll

Source: Reuters

American voters are evenly split between Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as their top choice to address the issue of terrorism following the Paris attacks, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

Asked to choose between the entire field of 2016 presidential hopefuls, 20 percent of 1,106 respondents surveyed between Nov. 16-17 opted for Trump. An equal share picked Clinton.(polling.reuters.com/#!poll/TM743CY15)

Given Clinton's background as a former secretary of state it is perhaps not surprising that she did reasonably well in the poll. However, Trump's good showing upends an emerging narrative that the Paris shootings and suicide bombings would prompt voters to rethink their support for the real estate billionaire, who leads the field of Republican presidential candidates.

Some pollsters and political pundits had predicted that Republican voters would now gravitate toward establishment candidates like Florida Senator Marco Rubio and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who has been languishing in the polls. Both are seen as stronger on foreign policy than Trump and his main Republican rival, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson. Neither have any experience in government and are running as Washington outsiders.

I know it sounds terrible. But I'm not surprised it came out this way. Trump is playing the hard man and Hillary is the Iron Lady. If you're going to have a fight, might as well have the toughest, meanest fighers possible.

given the pathetic Republican field, those polled didn't have much to pick from so they just chose the name they knew. Probably helps to explain Hillary's standing, too. The media and party honchos have all but crowned her while ignoring Bernie, so no surprise that she came out on top. Not in any way shape or form criticizing Hillary's supporters, but I do think name recognition was an important factor in the poll results.

It's not surprising that Clinton, with all her credentials, would be a first choice. But the polling for Trump emphasizes the utter mindlessness of the ones who chose him as our terrorism fighter.

Of course I'll take Bernie over Hillary, but in a comparison of Hillary vs. Trump it's not even close. Trump doesn't have a damned clue when it comes to ANYTHING more involved than throwing around a few select insults at people who he feels are beneath him.

Mr Tough Guy when he is sending other people to fight and die for him. "Bring it on," said tough guy #1. What the hell, Trump doesn't care about the people he fires, the people who work for him, or the troops. If a few ants get squished, what does he care?

Also nice to see that Americans still have that same regard for the Bush family name when it comes to keeping us safe from terrorists.

and trump is going to unfortunately do well because he is proposing solutions that will resonate with a lot of people. Our argument of passivity and love is not going to get a lot of public support.

Trump is loud and shrill and will voice what a lot of voters are fearing. He may win the election.
