BA pilot's eye damaged by 'military' laser shone into cockpit at Heathrow

Source: The Guardian

A British Airways pilot has reportedly been left with significant damage to his eyesight after a “military-strength” laser was shone into the cockpit of his plane landing at Heathrow, in what appears to be the most serious laser attack to date in the UK.

The pilot suffered a burned retina in his right eye and has not worked since, according to the head of the British Airline Pilots’ Association (Balpa).

The incident has escalated concerns over the problem of laser attacks. Balpa claims that one in two pilots has been in a plane targeted with lasers in the last 12 months.

...
In the US, the Federal Aviation Administration said the number of incidents had grown steadily since it started collating information on laser attacks in 2005. More than 3,700 incidents have been reported in the US this year.

1. Many people don't realize just how dangerous laser pointers are

One that is owned by my FIL appears very unassuming, but if you shine it in a dark, enclosed area, it glows very bright. The cockpit glass helps spread those rays throughout the flight deck. Those that shine it think they are conducting a harmless prank, but trust me, as ATC, I can tell you it is anything but harmless. I have always thought that we should create a glass or a coating that is able to harmlessly scatter and dispurse the beams away from the cockpit. These people deserve any punishment that is given to them and then some.

Amen to that. Aside from the danger, taking away a person's career and eye sight can make one's blood boil.

What happens when, God forbid, both pilots encounter eyesight issues? Between drones and lasers, it is scary getting on a plane these days.

Goggle the phrase "glasses goggles block laser" to see what's current.

throw the book, the biggest book imaginable, on anyone who pulls that stunt after the public education campaign. Make the "fun" kicks too costly to pursue, even for the biggest jerks.
