Canada to turn away single male Syrian refugees

Source: AFP

Ottawa (AFP) - Canada will accept only whole families, lone women or children in its mass resettlement of Syrian refugees while unaccompanied men -- considered a security risk -- will be turned away, it emerged Monday.

Since the Paris attacks launched by Syria-linked jihadists, a plan by new leader Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to fast-track the intake of 25,000 refugees by year's end has faced growing criticism in Canada.

Details of the plan will be announced Tuesday but Canada's ambassador to Jordan confirmed that refugees from camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey will be flown to Canada from Jordan starting December 1.

Speaking in Jordan on Monday, the ambassador Bruno Saccomani said the operation would cost an estimated Can$1.2 billion, the official Petra news agency reported.

6. 12/1Canada flies refugees right in their country. The USA makes them wait/paperwork at least 2 years

Only a humanitarian visa gets them in the USA 'fast'. They don't hand those visas out very often at all.

IMO, this will ramp-up very soon-> It may be faster for refugees to fly to Mexico, S/Cen.America or Canada and walk over the border? or boat over from Russia's coast in the spring/summer time? They have to wait for spring for boating, much to cold in winter.

They get deported just like any other unlawful immigrant. And someone that probably doesn't speak the language or a lot of cultural norms is going to stick out like a sore thumb.

10. I can't see this actually happening. I think the uproar will be too great.

At least, I'm crossing my fingers it is.

As the Liberal government prepares for Tuesday’s unveiling of its plan to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by year’s end, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is urging officials to “do the right thing” and not exclude single men.

“We do not believe that it is appropriate to make a vast generalization about a category of refugees and exclude them ahead of any processing, just because of who they are,” Mulcair said at a press conference in Ottawa.

“While security concerns remain of vital importance, will a young man who lost both parents be excluded from Canada’s refugee program?” the NDP leader asked.

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is urging the Liberal government not to exclude single men from refugee resettlement process.

“Will a gay man who is escaping persecution be excluded?” he added. “Will a widower who is fleeing (ISIS) after seeing his family killed be excluded?”

Bring in a family, it's cheaper to house them than it is an individual. It's hard enough finding rental accomodations in most major Canadian centres as it is now and we can't afford a lot given the Harper surplus just turned into a deficit after the books were looked at by the Liberals. The whole budget for the next three or four years for refugees is $1.2 Billion. Besides, and I believe it's right, we should be dealing with our homeless issues in Canada first before bringing people in from outside of the country. It will only make it more difficult for marginal Canadians to find a place they can afford to live in if the government is renting out accomodations to house refugees.

Time will tell whether Sweden and Germany will see an increase in ISIS because of it.
