Sheriff's deputies rescue newborn found buried near river

Source: AP

COMPTON, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles County sheriff's officials asked for the public's help Saturday in gaining information about a newborn baby deputies rescued after finding her buried beside a popular Compton bike path.

The girl was believed to be only 24 to 36 hours old when she was found Friday afternoon near a creek that flows into the Los Angeles River, said Sgt. Marvin Jaramilla of the Sheriff's Department's special victim unit. He said she was listed in stable condition on Saturday.

"There's indication that the child was born at a medical facility or a hospital," he said.

Jaramilla said two deputies found the girl around 4 p.m. after people on the bike path heard her cries and called authorities.

I guess there are still people who don't know about how to safely surrender a newborn. The word must be gotten out!

leaving her on a popular bike path meant she hoped the baby would be found.

I feel for the poor ignorant mother who probably could not get an abortion when she needed one. And may have even been a victim of rape herself.

It could just as easily be the father, or a boyfriend, a spouse who discovered he was not the father, a grandparent or other family member that didn't want to deal with the situation surrounding the infant's birth. Especially if the mother's culture has sexual or honor - based hang-ups. There are still superstitious cultures where even though abortion is forbidden, leaving a damaged (disfigured or sickly), unwanted or in-auspiciously born infant in the wilderness for God to take care of is an acceptable practice.

I suspect the bike path might have been the closest wilderness area to hide and abandon the infant with the least risk of it being traced back to the abandoning family. The infant was buried in rubble; the expectation would not have been that she would be found before the exposure killed her. That she survived long enough to be heard when someone came by is pretty much a miracle.

If the mother was not the one to abandon the infant, I suspect she is not in a safe place herself.

If only she can be connected with people who will really love and protect her as she must go forward. Hope there are going to be people who will take a personal interest in seeing her loneliest days are over.

someone tried to bury her alive, and was scared off, perhaps, by the voices of people who heard her cries.

A location by a bicycle path would allow someone to get there quickly with the bundled up infant, try to bury it, and take off fast while looking like someone out for exercise.

I'll bet you got it right.

like this were common in the 50s before many states passed safe haven laws which allowed people to just walk into a fire station, a police station, a church, a hospital etc. and hand over the child. Even back then it was seen more as an act of desperation than a crime.

Since the child is at least one week old it seems like it is not an attempt to hide the pregnancy/birth from anyone. Could be post pregnancy depression. But most likely someone just could not handle the crying and night schedule of a new baby. Also this could be a child of someone who did not know they could just leave the baby.

Very sad.
