Senate Votes to End Federal Funding for Planned Parenthood

Source: NBCNEWS

Senate Republicans have overwhelmed Democrats in a vote to end Planned Parenthood's federal funding.

Thursday's vote comes as the Senate moves toward approval of a bill that would all but repeal the president's health care law.

The bill would also take away the federal dollars that Planned Parenthood receives. Democrats tried restoring those funds, but their effort was rejected on a near party-line vote of 54-46.

The House is expected to send the bill to President Barack Obama in the coming days. The White House has pledged that Obama will veto it.

Republicans lack the two-thirds House and Senate majorities needed to override a veto. That means the measure will achieve one thing: giving both parties political messaging they can use in next year's elections.

Instead of a setup where coalitions are built between among many parties after an election, we decide on those coalitions before the election. It's the natural fallout of having to collect enough winner-take-all states to get a majority of electors.

Neither was I when I attended an Economics Club luncheon in Detroit and heard Goldwater speak when I was in fucking 8th grade in 1963.

Before I became old enough to cast a ballot I became a lifelong Democrat.

I will likely vote for Bernie in the MI primary. But this Goldwater girl thing -- Note: one word, it's his name, not a description of the color of some liquid -- is as smarmy an attack as I've ever seen. It is totally irrelevant to her current political positions, which should rightly be the topic of discussion.

Sorry, my friend. Just cannot go there with you.

I was yelling NIXON....why? that's what I heard in my Republican, lily white town.

However, I am pragmatic and know that idealistic bullshit will get us nowhere....I was there in the 60's, and we really are not in a position now to every have utopia....We are looking for incremental gains and fending off the FAR RIGHT....

It means SQUAT what she did in high school...she was influenced by many things.

Get HRC elected, she can work out a compromise that will do away with SuperPACs by allowing unlimited and unregistered funding directly to candidates and as a compromise she will sign a bill that revokes funding for PP and revokes the ACA. Everyone, especially HRC, wins!
Or $12 an hour...whichever is easiest.

Now they can go to the electorate and say look, if you return a majority of us to Congress, and give us the White House, we'll be able to pass this legislation and make it stick.

For those inclined to support repeal of the ACA and the attacks on women's health, this will present a very strong, very viable illustration of what's at stake. And the more times they illustrate this, though they be failure after failure, the greater the impression they'll make on their followers.

Seems pretty straightforward and potentially quite effective. They may be idiots but they're at the head of a host of idiots, and what may seem foolish from the outside is probably very astute when viewed from inside they and their followers belief structure.

19. Something my dad used to say:
Thu Dec 3, 2015, 05:33 PM
Dec 2015

"Fascism will come to America under the guise of patriotism." ===Huey P. Long, Governor of Louisiana & Senator

And my dad was an adult when Huey was governor. People knew he was dangerous and that he had to be stopped.

My dad's first wife's brother was roommates with the doctor who was the alleged gunman, and she said that there was no way that mild-mannered Dr. Carl Weiss could have killed Long.

Roosevelt considered Long a radical demagogue. The president privately said of Long that along with General Douglas MacArthur, "[H]e was one of the two most dangerous men in America."

There is still debate whether he was a populist or a fascist demagogue.
