Weekly Address: We Will Not Be Terrorized

Source: White House

In this week's address, the President offered his condolences to the families and community of the victims of the San Bernardino shooting. He recognized the possibility that the two attackers may have been radicalized, a reminder to all of us that we need to work together to prevent people from falling victim to attempts by extremist organizations to encourage violence. The President called on Congress to close the loophole that allows people on the No-Fly list to purchase guns, a simple and logical step that would make it harder for potential terrorists to acquire weapons. And he reminded us that we cannot accept mass shootings like this one as routine in our country, and emphasized that above all else, his priority is the safety and security of the American people.

The GOP is working in fevered pitch to exploit and promote fear. Half of their base is already pooping their diapers over foreign terrorism when we are more likely to be killed by a drunk driver or some crazed lunatic. "Fear, its what's for dinner".

The Supreme Court needs to define 'well regulated militia'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

The people were supposed to keep arms and assemble into a militia when the state was
threatened. A citizens' army so to speak. Era of the minutemen. Civil society was not
envisioned to be an armed camp. Your musket stayed home at the ready.

Thomas Hobbes established man always has the right to defend himself.

We're becoming a society in fear. Down this path lies a regimented society where
visible guns are everywhere. Don't leave home without one.

The right to 'bear arms' is the sticking point.

But in my state, there are rules for transporting guns. Shotgun, unloaded, in the trunk.
Even that can get you into trouble in some states.

we will continue to be terrorized by gun crazies of all stripes, from radical religious fundies, both christian and muslim. Please see if there's some way to reduce the availability of guns, publish research, do something. I really think that until a rw politician has a relative killed, there's no hope. Only personal tragedy would galvanize them, otherwise they don't give a shit about other people's families being killed.

The degree of over reaction in terms of laws, "security procedures", media frenzy and military actions to the actual amount of terrorism we are subjected to is simply mind boggling.

Fear and war mongering have become the staples of our daily news cycles. Yet standard old mass shootings in our movie theaters, on our college campuses and even at our elementary schools elicits virtually NO SUBSTANTIATIVE reaction and a fraction of the media frenzy.

One day, folks in this nation will see the light. The 2nd amendment has been around for 228 years but it's only been in the past 30 or so when this nation went hog wild with the hoarding of "military style" guns and ammunition, and apparently including a large chunk of buyers who never served in any military. The phenomena seems to correspond with the explosion of RW talk radio and television.
