WWII missing Marine accounted for; Gov. Brown sends condolences

Source: MyNewsLA

POSTED BY ALEXANDER NGUYEN

Gov. Jerry Brown and First Lady Anne Gust on Friday honored a 20-year-old U.S. Marine whose remains had been unaccounted for since he was reported killed in action in the Pacific theater in World War II.

Cpl. James D. Otto of Los Angeles will be buried Tuesday at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Otto was assigned to Company L, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines Regiment, 2nd Marine Division in November 1943 when he landed amid stiff Japanese resistance on the island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll, officials said.

About 1,000 marines lost their lives and more than 2,000 were wounded over several days of intense fighting over the island and Otto was reported killed in action on Nov. 20, 1943, on the first day of battle, according to the Defense Department.

Hats of to DoD who has been very active recently in locating lost graves and identifying remains of service members lost in the Pacific. My home state recently brought home one of our own from the same Battle of Tarawa, a MoH recipient
