Hillary Clinton Calls for 'Hard Look' at Visa Waiver Program After San Bernardino Shooting

FORT DODGE, Iowa — Hillary Clinton on Friday called for a "hard look" at the visa waiver program that allowed a Pakistani woman to enter the United States and, along with her husband, kill 14 people at a social services center in San Bernardino, California.

"Visas are a problem and we have to look at that and see what we need to do to tighten up requirements," Clinton told reporters at a campaign stop in Fort Dodge, making comparisons to the 9/11 hijackers who also came to the country on visas.

Tashfeen Malik was admitted through a fiancée visa — also known as a K-1 visa — to marry Syed Farook, federal authorities confirmed Friday.

"It's a calculated balance between wanting to keep our country open for people coming and going and reciprocity with other countries and being sure that we are being vigilant in protecting ourselves," she said. "I think we have to make sure we do more to get the balance right." .................

That would be a huge step in the right direction in helping the American worker. She is of course right that we do need to worry about security issues from that part of the world.

Where it's commendable that the former Secretary of State recognizes the problem, she merely gives it a glancing blow rather than fully tackle the complex issue by offering a specific plan to actually shore up visa requirements. One would expect a generic response from someone at the committee-level, but actual specifics from someone running for president. She's fortunate the gloves haven't come off yet where she'll be pinned down for specifics instead of fluff.

The San Bernadino tragedy has nothing to do with the visa waiver program (which, by definition, means a person does not need a visa).

Smooth Visa Process for Woman in Attack Is Focus of Inquiry

The woman involved in the shootings in San Bernardino, Calif., on Wednesday passed through two rounds of criminal and national security background checks as she obtained a “fiancé visa” and later a resident green card to live in the United States, federal officials said.

Those checks turned up no negative information about the woman, Tashfeen Malik, a federal official said Friday. But after the F.B.I. said Friday that it was investigating the shootings as an act of terrorism — Ms. Malik pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in a Facebook post the day of the attack — officials were scouring her immigration record to see if there were any revealing details they might have missed.

She was crazy, not stupid. Well, stupid, in thinking they could get away with it, stupid in having a baby. Or maybe that was part of the crazy. At this point, we cannot find out.
