Iraq gives Turkish forces 48 hours to leave country

Source: AFP

Baghdad (AFP) - Iraq on Sunday gave Turkey 48 hours to withdraw forces it said had entered the country illegally or face "all available options", including recourse to the UN Security Council.

Baghdad, which is struggling to assert its sovereignty while receiving foreign assistance against the Islamic State jihadist group, said Turkish forces with tanks and artillery entered Iraq without its permission.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said in a letter to his Iraqi counterpart Haider al-Abadi that there would be no deployment of forces until Baghdad's concerns were addressed.

However, the future of the forces already sent remained unclear.

they will ask Russia to kindly take out the tanks and trucks which have violated their nation's borders for way more than 16 seconds.

My guess is the Turks will leave Iraq in less than 48 hours.

In June 2014, when ISIL militia took over the city, they changed the name to Du'a city.

Yazidi civilians fled the city in 2014. The region has seen fighting between ISIL and Iraqi Peshmerga forces, but was under ISIL control in August 2015.

There is a war for political influence in Iraq right now, with Iran courting the current government and the U.S. trying to squelch their influence. If Turkey refuses to pull out, the Iraqi government could easily make some very public overtures to Iran for assistance. Iran, which has already been working overtime to expand their influence in Yemen and Syria, would no doubt jump at the opportunity. That would put the U.S. in a tough spot. We'd either have to side with our NATO ally and write Iraq off completely, or we'd have to bring pressure against Ankara to maintain our influence in Iraq and keep the Iranians from expanding their sphere even further.

Iran-Iraq relations are closer today than they have been in generations. If Iraq is being invaded by a NATO member and their "ally" the United States will not help them, there's almost no question that they'd turn to Iran for help. Iran already has a small number of military trainers an analysts in Iraq assisting the Iraqi army, and there's no way that Iran would just stand by while the Turks invaded the country.

Iraq warns Turkey to pull forces, Ankara says unlikely

Baghdad (AFP) - Baghdad warned Ankara on Monday that time is running out to remove forces it sent to northern Iraq without permission, but Turkey indicated it was unlikely to do so.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said there were "only 24 hours left" of the 48 that Iraq gave Turkey to remove tanks and soldiers sent to a base near Mosul. And Abadi visited the country's air force headquarters, saying: "We must be prepared and ready to defend Iraq and its sovereignty," according to his office. "The air force has the capability... to protect Iraq and its borders from any threat it faces," the premier said.

But despite the tough talk by Abadi, who is struggling to assert Iraq's sovereignty while receiving foreign assistance against the Islamic State group, Baghdad's air force is hopelessly outgunned by Turkey and its realistic recourse is limited to diplomacy.

A senior Turkish official said Monday that Ankara was unlikely to withdraw the forces, which number between 150 and 300 soldiers backed by 20 tanks, that were deployed to a base in the Bashiqa area, near IS's Iraqi hub Mosul.
