Bernie Sanders Unveils Climate Plan
Source: NBC News
Democratic presidential Bernie Sanders rolled out an expansive climate plan Monday that aims to cut U.S. carbon emissions 80% by 2050 and create 10 million clean energy jobs.... "Climate change is the single greatest threat facing our planet," the plan states. But it hasn't been solved because "a small subsection of the one percent are hell-bent on doing everything in their power to block action."... And beyond the carbon tax, Sanders would ban fracking, ban offshore drilling, and ban the exportation of oil or liquefied natural gas.
He would use money from the carbon tax to finance clean energy development, enhancements to the national grid, and improvements to make homes more efficient. He would also raise the fuel economy standards to 65 miles per gallon by 2025 for cars. But at the same time, he would begin to phase out nuclear power plants by placing a moratorium on license renewals, saying solar, wind, and geothermal are better choices.
Meanwhile, his plans calls for infrastructure spending on things like high speed passenger and cargo rail, along with more electronic car charging stations and plans to cities more walkable.
Annie Leonard, the executive director of Greenpeace U.S. said that Sanders' plan showed "he has broken free of the corporate and 1% money that has held back climate policy for far too long."

(10,497 posts)have warped our government into protecting the 1% at the expense of everyone else. At some point we will have to stand up and restore Democracy, the best and least harmful way to do it will be to elect Bernie for President and stand behind him to see his policies through to completion!

(4,490 posts)but it's worlds better than what anyone else has proposed. The longer we put this off, the more drastic any reasonable plan will have to be. We are quickly entering "do or die" time on this, if we haven't already. Hell, we might be screwed by now as far as I know.

(57,936 posts)Electricity, solar energy, vaccines, gasoline motors, nuclear energy, satellites, radio, computers, television --- all of these things were viewed at one time in history as impossible.
We humans make things possible. And that is what we have to do now. If we want our grandchildren to survive, to live in a livable world, we have to do the impossible and legislate the changes Bernie is suggesting.
The alternative is starvation for many, many people. The alternative is migrations that make the current migrations in the world look like mere vacations. The alternative is losing land masses like parts of Florida.
We do not have the choice to even ask whether we can legislate the impossible. We need to confront our choices realistically and do what we need to do.

(7,886 posts)We have Started enough wars on our own, but the change in climate causes unrest and pushes people to fight. For example Syria has been having a severe drought for like, 7 years or so.
