The Republican presidential front-runner's statement advocating a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States" was condemned as bigoted, unconstitutional and potentially dangerous for American interests abroad.
David Cameron, breaking the custom of British leaders not commenting on American presidential contenders, criticised it as "divisive, unhelpful and quite simply wrong."
Overnight almost 30,000 people had signed a petition demanding that Mr Trump be banned from entering the UK, following his comments on radicalised parts of London.
Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, ridiculed the business tycoon, saying: "The only reason I wouldn't go to some parts of New York is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump."

(41,209 posts)You know Republican candidates are nuts when they make Boris look sensible in comparison; even Romney managed that, and Trump is several degrees worse.
OTOH, Trump may have the advantage of bringing his party down against almost any Democratic candidate. OTOH, even for that, the thought of a fascist (and I don't use the term lightly) as a candidate for President of the US truly terrifies me.
And no, he's not needed in the UK.
But I do have to add: Trump didn't get all these ideas out of his own wooden head. The extreme comments of the British tabloid writers undoubtedly provide fuel for the overseas nutters' views of Britain.

(4,220 posts)Despite being owned by Murdoch, their reporting comes across as anti-Trump...The segment is sort of "has Trump finally jumped the shark" feel although not using those words of course... And the segment is a the very beginning of each hour...
Each time they show the petition they comment on how the number is rising.
Each time they do the story they show who else has been banned from the UK recently, who include a couple of "radical" clerics and the American "burn the Korans" guy from Florida.
Pretty strong stuff, especially for what I would expect a Murdoch owned entity to show after being exposed to Faux and the NY Post at home...

(14,746 posts)...Parliament considers all petitions that get more than 100,000 signatures for a debate. Also, Government responds to all petitions that get more than 10,000 signatures.
So the UK Government has to respond to the demand to have old fartface kicked out of the UK.

(4,220 posts)But just to keep this all in proper perspective,
441,935 people signed on to a petition to:
"Close all UK borders and not allow any new immigration until ISIS is defeated."
Not sure when that one went up but that is significant...

The UK government will not close Britains borders. It will ensure access for legitimate travellers and trade whilst operating its borders securely to protect the public from the threat of terrorism."

(25,704 posts)Ie, if someone has a toxic ideology they should be kept out of the country?
Michael Savage is barred from UK.
There's a big difference between saying "we don't want you" to one person and to saying it to millions of people.
Do you truly believe that all Muslims adhere to a "toxic ideology"?

(101,360 posts)But the university said Mr Trump's comments had been "wholly incompatible" with its ethos and values.
Mr Trump has also been dropped as a business ambassador for Scotland by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
He had been appointed as a GlobalScot ambassador by Labour's then first minister Jack McConnell in 2006, but a Scottish government spokeswoman said Mr Trump's "recent remarks have shown he is no longer fit to be a business ambassador for Scotland".

Fuck knows what he was doing as a Scottish 'business ambassador' in the first place. A bit of brown-nosing by the Scottish government (both parties) that they ought to have known better about.
